Southern Cameroons Revolution: Going, going, gone 0

Things are falling apart for the Southern Cameroons revolution and the members of the Ambazonian Interim Government can no longer read from the same script. We of the Cameroon Concord News Group recently rejected the resignation of Secretary Chris Anu and we advised that cabinet issues be kept as a nuclear secret. To be sure, nothing seems to interest the Ambazonian cabinet ministers and they have blatantly refused to see how they can jointly strategize to forge ahead with the struggle while keeping their differences aside.

While free speech and democratic debate may justify some of the outings of the Ambazonian cabinet ministers, we of this publication are asking how they help Southern Cameroonians to terminate the cases brought by a vicious sanguinary regime against their leaders. Does a debate surrounding Ambazonian leaders organizing meetings with other leaders wanted by the enemy help or provide the enemy with evidence against the leaders and the Southern Cameroons cause? Who gains from this infighting deep within the Interim Government concerning meetings supposedly organized from the enemy’s dungeon?

Yesterday’s audio by Chris Anu questioning the integrity and honesty of the Secretary of State for Finance has reportedly made matters worse and more intractable. In the words of our London Bureau Chief, “The Southern Cameroons revolution is now facing a hydra-headed crisis.”

Reacting to Secretary Chris Anu’s audio message, a spokesman for the Secretary of State for Finance told Cameroon Concord News Group that “It is a smear campaign against Hon. Tabenyang Brado because of disagreement on the proposed conference.”

We understand the long standing differences between Chris Anu and Tabenyang Brado emerged ever since the creation of ABC TV. Why Communications Secretary Chris wanted $9500 a month for satellite cost and an additional extra $3500 a month for salaries, the Secretary of State for Finance has always maintained that the ABC remains a good idea but it’s also not sustainable.

We of the Cameroon Concord News Group had opined late last year that $13000 a month for just 6 hours of broadcasting was not good value for Ambazonian money. We also had reliable information that ABC had no viable business plan to grow into financial independence at a time when there are more pressing financial challenges for the Southern Cameroons struggle.

The Secretary of State for Finance has hinted Cameroon Concord News Group of his decision to make public a full detailed financial statement of the Southern Cameroons Interim Government from November 2017 when the Ambazonian government was formed to December 2018. Our primary worry is that His Excellency President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe’s involvement in these controversies is already creating a rift among Ambazonians in captivity in Kondengui. They are in their thousands.

President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe should have remained the mythical and emblematic leader that he is rather than a factional leader. Cameroon Concord News Group is of the opinion that if by any reason some Ground Zero commanders come up against his decisions and interventions then that may further weaken his authority. Acting President Sako, Communications Secretary Chris Anu and others even not as leaders may move back to their activist roles and continue the struggle but the loser will still be President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and his ability to hold and influence the struggle together.

We of the Cameroon Concord News Group support his leadership but disagree with his involvement in the current controversy. Dr Akwanga and Barrister Agbor Balla who were in the enemy’s dungeon can tell him how the enemy operates. Atanga Nji, Laurent Esso and Momo who are controlling that prison are very ruthless. Very soon the Pen’s, Mancho’s even Tassang who is an arch enemy of Milan may disagree with President Ayuk Tabe and the split will continue outside and cause more harm.

Cameroon Concord News Group is concerned that President Ayuk Tabe’s involvement may find its way into his case and provide the enemy with evidence to allege that he is directing military operations from inside his detention center. We wonder what his lawyers are doing.

For President Ayuk Tabe to be too trusting to summon and preside over these meetings from the enemy’s jail is a grave error and a costly mistake.  Even most sympathizers and supporters may be very disappointed in the short and long term. This meeting was unnecessary and counterproductive and even harmful. We wish Chris Anu did not address it in public at all. We wish the damage can be mitigated by nobody keeping the talk about the meeting and the fallout alive. To be complacent in the enemy dungeon is a grave costly error.

When Stoke City got relegated from the Premier League less than 12 months ago, few could have expected one of their transfer flops to be leading the line against Manchester United in the Champions League this week.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored just five goals in 32 games for the Potters – ironically, two came in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United – and was a major disappointment after his move from Schalke 04.

The Stoke misfit saw his contract cancelled by mutual consent when they dropped out of the top flight and, to the surprise of many, he landed on his feet with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Cameroon international has had a limited role in the French capital but is clearly relishing being part of one of Europe’s top clubs.

Now, he’s been thrust to the forefront of their bid for Champions League glory and could lead the line in their last-16 first leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Choupo-Moting could start at Old Trafford with Neymar and Cavani ruled out

The powerful 29-year-old made his Bundesliga breakthrough with Hamburg as a teenager and made 10 appearances for Germany up to Under 21 level, scoring eight goals.

In May 2010, however, he received a senior call-up by Cameroon, the country of his father’s birth, ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

Despite once coming under an investigation into his international eligibility, Choupo-Moting has won 48 caps for Cameroon and scored 14 goals.

The Cameroonian had a tough time at Stoke as they were relegated 

The striker spent three years at Mainz 05 from 2011 to 2014 before making his way to Schalke 04 for a three-season stint.

His form earned him his Premier League move to Stoke City, although he could not build on a bright start as the Potters were relegated and he was sidelined from March onwards by a groin injury.

The big-name superstars of PSG have limited him to an impact sub role, but he started against Bordeuax at the weekend and is now primed to feature at Old Trafford given Neymar and Edison Cavani are ruled out.

Choupo-Moting recently spoke about the challenge of facing a “changed” Manchester United as he expects a tough clash.

He told RMC : “Manchester United, they have changed. But it’s always like that when you change coaches.

“There may be a new state of mind in the team, everyone wants to show their best.

“But I do not care about other teams, we have to think about ourselves, we believe in ourselves.

“We have the quality to beat anyone but it will be a tough match because Manchester United are a very good team with great quality players.”

Four people died when gunmen raided a hospital and burnt it to the ground in western Cameroon where anglophone separatists have been fighting troops, witnesses and a local official said Monday.

The incident occurred in Kumba, a town which serves as the commercial hub for the anglophone region and which has been badly hit by the violence between separatists and Cameroon troops that began in October 2017.

“Attackers killed four people and burnt down the hospital,” said an administrative official in the Kumba region, confirming information from a witness.

It was not immediately clear whether the victims were shot or died in the fire, nor whether they were patients at the facility. Another local source said it appeared separatists were behind the attack.

The incident occurred on National Youth Day, the anniversary of the 1961 referendum which saw Cameroon’s western English-speaking areas joined onto the francophone areas which had just won independence from France.

Kumba lies about 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of Buea, capital of the Southwest region which along with the Northwest region is home to an anglophone minority that accounts for about a fifth of the country’s population.

Both areas, which were once ruled by Britain, have long complained of discrimination at the hands of the French-speaking majority and where separatists are fighting for independence.

Since the start of February, at least four people have been killed in Buea, one of whom was decapitated, as separatists announced plans to disrupt the February 11 anniversary.

Over the past 16 months, there have been regular clashes between troops and groups of separatists who have attacked police stations, schools and staged mass kidnappings.

UN figures show around 437,000 people have been forced out of their homes by the ongoing conflict, with another 32,000 fleeing across the border to neighbouring Nigeria.

Southern Cameroons Crisis: The imminent brink of war 0

In a renewed attack, Cameroonian government forces struck the Anglophone village of Ossing in Manyu division in the early hours of Sunday, 10th October, killing and maiming scores of civilians with many displaced. This fresh attack follows Thursday Massacre in Besongabang, another Anglophone village in what is now infamously known as the Anglophone Crisis. The conflict in the Southern region of Cameroon is part of the long-standing Anglophone problem.

During the World War 1, allied forces captured “Kamerun”, as it was then known, from Germany. With the help of the League of Nations, the territory was divided between the British and the French, with a large chunk of the territory becoming French Cameroon. The remaining strip bordering Nigeria was christened British Cameroon. By this time, the British Cameroon which had been split into a northern and Southern administrative units, was governed from Nigeria, even though it was not seen as being a part of Nigeria. In 1960, the independence granted Francophone Cameroon and Nigeria, enabled the United Nations to organize a referendum. This allowed  anglophone Cameroonians to decide whether to merge with Nigeria or Cameroon.

As it turned out, independence which was viewed as the most sexy option was not considered in the referendum and so, Northern Cameroons joined Nigeria, while Southern Cameroons opted for reunification with Cameroon. In the wake of its emergence, the constitution of the newly created  Federal Republic of Cameroon ensured adequate recognition for the Anglophone region. This suddenly changed in 1966 when the then President Ahmadou proscribed all existing political parties of the time other than the ruling Cameroonian National Union. 6 years later, the government’s federal structure with a unitary system was replaced with a new constitution through a national referendum, that did not tally with a 1961 accord that “proposals for revision [of the constitution] shall be adopted by simple majority vote of the members of the Federal Assembly, provided that such majority includes a majority of the representatives…of each of the Federated States.”

Two years after he took over power in 1984, President Paul Biya felt more comfortable identifying with the name of the country prior to the 1961 unification, and so renamed the nation the Republic of Cameroon. He goes further to  alter the national flag from a two-star design, which had signified the union of the anglophone and francophone regions, to that of a single star. Biya’s slur to the anglophone region sparked a decline in relations with the central government.

In disagreement,  Fon Gorji Dinka, an astute anglophone lawyer and the first president of the  Cameroon Bar Association, condemned the government’s actions as illegitimate and called for an independent anglophone entity known as the Republic of Ambazonia. This is the battle that is still being fought to this day. This festering conflict represents a major test as Cameroon’s future. In the meantime,  roughly 20% of the country’s population of 24.6 million people are Anglophone while the  majority are Francophone.

The unfair domination of French-speaking politicians in government has long been the source of conflict. Activists in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions are protesting their forced assimilation into the dominant Francophone society, arguing that the process violates their minority rights, which are protected under agreements that date back to the 1960s. Anglophone political representation and involvement at many levels of society has dwindled since the Federal Republic of Cameroon became the United Republic of Cameroon in 1972. This has now led to the growing calls for the Anglophone region to secede from Cameroon.

In his response to the renewed violence in the Anglophone region, NJ Ayuk, an indigene of Anglophone Cameroon and founder of Africa Now Foundation, a charity organization, wants the violence to stop: “. There must be a peaceful solution out of this mess”, he says. “You can’t talk peace with guns”. The leading energy lawyer and CEO of Centurion Law Group, whose family home got burnt in the Sunday’s attack, argues that ” Setting houses ablaze does not bring a solution. I have been blessed and lucky. I am more worried about those who got it worse by this senseless violence. What is troubling is the many people that are being radicalized by the violence. My family can lost property but so many have lost their lives and many are refugees”. “Both sides of this struggle have to seek dialogue. Violence will get our society no where. You only hate those you fear. Politicians can’t claim to love their citizens and then burn their houses at the same time.We are heading towards a point of no return and I have not seen a level of tribalism and ethnic hatred as now and it will take more than words and burnt houses to fix this. It’s real and we must all live up to our responsibility to find peace through dialogue. We are losing a lot of young people. I am saddened by the failure of leaders to find common ground. Violence will not get us anything”.

Although both the Anglophone and Francophone regions have been accused of war crimes and refuse to talk to each other. Separatists have since lost confidence in the government after it violated previous agreements. President Paul Biya said that his “government is open to dialogue only as far as the unity and diversity of our country are not questioned.” This seems particularly tone deaf given the Yaoundé regime’s history of undermining the country’s “unity and diversity.”

The Cameroon Special Criminal Court imposed travel restrictions on former Minister of Defense, Alain Edgard Mebe Ngo’o, banning him from leaving the country “till further notice,” according to an order signed Jan. 30 but made public on Sunday.

The court also barred Ngo’o’s wife Bernadette Mebe Ngo’o, and two army officers, Ghislain Victor Mboutou and Maxime Leonard Mbangue from leaving the country.

The order was due to an ongoing investigation into allegations that the former minister and the three others were involved in bribery and corruption over the purchase of military equipment from Magforce, a company that sells a full range of military clothing, equipment and vehicles.

Ngo’o served in Cameroonian government as Defense Minister from 2009-2015, making him one of the longest serving defense ministers in the country. He was sacked from the government in 2017 after serving as Minister of Transport from 2015-2017.

According to sources at Cameroon’s presidency, he was a “confidant” and “an important security adviser” to President Paul Biya during his stay in government.

US President Donald Trump “may not even be a free person” by 2020, when he is expected to run for a second term, says Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren.

The Massachusetts lawmaker, who is running for the 2020 race, made the comment during a campaign event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Sunday.

“Every day there is a racist tweet, a hateful tweet — something really dark and ugly,” Warren said in the key state. “What are we as candidates, as activists, as the press going to do about it? We’re going to chase after those everyday?”

She further suggested that the ongoing investigations into Trump’s ties with Russia could strip him of his presidency and freedom.

“Here’s what bothers me. By the time we get to 2020, Donald Trump may not even be president. In fact, he may not even be a free person.”

Warren had called Trump a product of a “rigged system that props up the rich and the powerful and kicks dirt on everyone else” during her kickoff speech in Lawrence, Massachusetts Saturday.;

“Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President,” Trump tweeted in response. “Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore?”

Italy Deputy PM says Meeting with Yellow Vests protesters in France ‘legitimate’ 0

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio has defended his controversial meeting with Yellow Vests protesters, which prompted Paris to recall the French ambassador from Rome and sparked a crisis in bilateral ties.

Di Maio, of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement, said Sunday it was “legitimate” for him to meet a group of French protesters who were about to stand in May’s European Parliament elections.

Speaking to reporters in Milan, he mocked French President Emmanuel Macron for treating the meeting as a crime of offending the royalty, and said, “I’m sorry that Macron lived this as a bit lese-majeste.”

Relations between France and Italy sank to a new low last week when Paris recalled its ambassador, citing meddling in domestic affairs after Di Maio met with senior figures of the Yellow Vests movement in France. 

The French Foreign Ministry on Thursday asked the envoy to return for consultations, and called the meeting a “provocation.” It said the meeting had come after “repeated accusations, unfounded attacks, and outlandish claims” by Rome.

The remarks, which it called “unprecedented” since the end of World War II, featured De Maio’s fellow deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, calling Macron a “terrible president” in a Facebook video last month, and likewise publicly supporting the protesters.

“The opportunity will come on May 26 (the election day) when finally, the French people will be able to take back control of their future, destiny, (and) pride, which are poorly represented by a character like Macron,” Salvini said in the video.

Di Maio even said his meeting with the activists was aimed at preparing a common front for elections in May, while boasting on Twitter that “the wind of change has crossed the Alps.”

The Yellow Vests demonstrations, which have daunted Paris with their size, have been denouncing high living costs and alleged lack of government care for rural areas.

Trial of Catalan separatist leaders puts Spanish state on the defensive 0

As 12 Catalan separatist leaders prepare to go on trial in Madrid, Spain has been forced to defend the independence and impartiality of its courts.

Catalan separatists have dismissed the high-profile trial which begins Tuesday at Spain’s Supreme Court as a “farce” whose outcome is already pre-determined.

Not so, says the government, which has published a thick file to show Spain’s justice system is just as fair as its European counterparts, citing rankings by the European Commission, the European Court of Human Rights and Transparency International.

Supreme Court President Carlos Lesmes points out that if the justice system really was not independent, the king’s brother-in-law would not be in jail for corruption, nor would a court ruling have sparked a no-confidence motion that brought down the conservative government in June.

“I think this will be the most important trial we’ve had in democracy,” he told reporters before the start of the trial. “It’s a challenge because there’s been a big smear campaign of Spain’s judiciary.”

State on trial?

Spain has had a long-standing public perception that its judiciary is biased.

In the EU’s 2018 “Justice Scoreboard”, Spain came sixth to last among 28 member states for public perception of the independence of judges and courts, behind Poland and Hungary.

Despite repeated denials, the conservative government in power at the time of Catalonia’s attempt to break from Spain in October 2017 and the Socialists that took power in June have each been accused of exerting pressure on judges.

“It is the state which will end up in the dock,” one of the main defendants on trial, former Catalan vice president Oriol Junqueras, predicted from pre-trial detention. Junqueras and 11 others are on trial for their role in the attempt to break from Spain.

Separatists call them “political prisoners” who are suffering oppression of the kind experienced in Spain during Francisco Franco’s 1939-75 dictatorship.

‘Unacceptable interference’

In a ruling, Spain’s Supreme Court said the group were not on trial for their ideas. The majority of the defendants were “political leaders who were members of the government of an autonomous region and therefore the highest representatives of the (Spanish) state in Catalonia”, it said.

The government has also had to defend itself from accusations that it put pressure on judges during the criminal investigation phase. Public prosecutors accuse nine of the 12 of rebellion, which implies the use of violence   a key charge which has divided Spanish legal experts.

But the state attorney decided in November to only accuse them of the lesser crime of sedition. This has led conservative opposition parties, which take a hard line against Catalan separatism, to accuse the government of “unacceptable interference” in the case.

They suspect the move was part of a bid by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s minority government to win the much-needed support in parliament of Catalan separatist parties for its 2019 budget.

Justice Minister Dolores Delgado, though, said Spain’s new state attorney took the decision “without the government imposing anything”.

European courts

In November, a conservative senator, Ignacio Cosido, also contributed to perception that the judiciary is biased.

On WhatsApp, he welcomed the promotion of Manuel Marchena   a judge seen as close to the conservatives who will be presiding at the separatists’ trial   at the head of the Supreme Court.

Cosido said it would allow the conservatives to “control” the court “behind the scenes.” After the controversy this generated, Marchena gave up the promotion.

Courts in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland have also contributed to doubts about Spain’s legal system by refusing to extradite separatists who had escaped after the declaration of independence.

A German court for instance last year refused to send former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont back to Spain on rebellion charges.

A Belgian court meanwhile has agreed to consider a civil lawsuit filed by Puigdemont’s lawyers against Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena, accusing him of [lacking] impartiality in the case against the Catalan separatist leaders.

Spain has not publicly criticised these decisions. “Our best communication campaign will be the trial,” said Lesmes.

Cameroon Concord News Group has received persistent information about the alleged resignation of the Cameroon Concord Man of the Year, Hon Chris Anu as the Secretary of Communication of the Interim Government of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia.  No official communication from the Interim Government or Secretary Chris Anu has come into our newsroom to officially announce this resignation.  The information that Cameroon Concord News and Cameroon Intelligence Report received is therefore tentative.

Cameroon Concord News Group is mindful of the fact that for the resignation to become effective, it must be accepted by the Interim Government of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia. No such endorsement of the alleged resignation has come into our newsroom as well.  Cameroon Concord News Group strongly urges Secretary Chris Anu if his alleged resignation is officialised to reconsider his decision. Cameroon Concord News Group also urges the Interim Government of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia to reject the resignation on behalf and in the interest of the people of Ambazonia whom he served with stoic determination, honesty and patriotic zeal.

Cameroon Concord News and Cameroon Intelligence Report does not deem it necessary to analyse the circumstances that led to the alleged resignation because doing so will not serve the best interests of the revolution. It will not serve the self defence needs of the civilian population of Ambazonia undergoing a barbaric genocide. It will not serve the legal defence needs of His Excellency Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and members of his cabinet   who were abducted and are held in captivity in French Cameroun’s enemy dungeon facing an ethnic Beti-Bulu criminal court-martial.  Suffice to state unambiguously for this purpose, that Cameroon Concord News Group’s rejection of the alleged resignation and strong appeal for the Hon Secretary Chris Anu to reconsider his decision, is informed by the dictates of necessity and overwhelming Ambazonia public interest.

Hon Chris Anu was overwhelmingly voted Cameroon Concord News Group’s person of the year by near popular acclamation.  The rejection of his resignation and call for him to reconsider his decision with frenzied and impatient appeal by the same masses that voted him person of the year, is an attribute of confidence in his competence, effectiveness, efficiency and undisputed patriotism in his service to the people.  The same people who voted him and many more are currently undergoing yet another genocide on the watch of the international community.  He cannot abandon them in time of need.

Cameroon Concord News Group stands by the people to strongly urge Secretary Chris Anu, that he must place the interest of his people above his personal sentiments, sensitives, anger and recriminations.    If anything, whatever angered and pushed him to take this decision should instead challenge him to fight on for the overall interest of the Ambazonia. The interest of his people and their fight for survival, liberation and freedom has greatly contributed to successes recorded so far. Secretary Chris Anu did not resign, flee or hide in fright as many people did after the abduction of His Excellency President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and members of the Interim Government of Ambazonia in Nera Hotel in Nigeria.  He took the bait and provocation by the enemy and like a lonely general, went to Nigeria and confronted the enemy on his own terms. The results of that effrontery saved the lives of our President His Excellency Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and members of the Interim Government. He cannot be heard to resign now when those who disappeared in time of need, come calling. Their intrusion should be considered an irritation and nothing more and ignored, rather than resign.

No one should be misled to speculate that the alleged resignation by Hon Chris Anu is a marked disagreement with the President His Excellency AyukTabe. Far from it.  Secretary Chris Anu has consistently supported in words and actions the leadership of His Excellency Sisiku Ayuk Tabe who is the emblematic symbol of the Southern Cameroons/ Ambazonia struggle. He has said so in international media and mobilized fellow Ambazonians and international public opinion to ward off attempts by power predators and opportunists to shift the focus and imperil the struggle.  It is therefore perfectly understandable that he like a majority of Ambazonians will take a hard stand against these power predators, profiteers and opportunists in any attempt no matter the circumstances to once more infiltrate and derail the focus of the struggle.

For the purpose of the struggle, Cameroon Concord News Group takes this opportunity to recall that the critical focus of all Ambazonians at this point in time must be: 1) The support of GZ operations through county by county and local government by local government operation structures for the self-defence of the people of Ambazonia under genocide, 2) The provision of emergency support to our internationally displaced civilian population and refugees in foreign countries, 3) The intensification of diplomatic action  to kick French Cameroun out of the territory of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia and to bring French Cameroun terrorist genocidal regime and its murderous terrorist forces to account for their crimes, 4) The defence of our President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, members of the Interim Government who were abducted with him, hundreds of thousands of Ambazonians abducted and deported to concentration camps in French Cameroun or appearing before its court-martial execution arm of the genocide.

Cameroon Concord News Group recalls that the organization of conferences for what so ever purpose is not one of these priorities and so must neither shift the focus of the people on the above key issues begging our individual and collective attention nor divide the people.

Cameroon Concord News Group urges the people of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia to strongly support the leadership of the Interim Government under His Excellency Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, the Acting President Dr Samuel Sako, Secretary of Communication Hon Chris Anu, County by County operational leadership and Ground Zero commanders in moving this struggle towards the total liberation of Ambazonia and holding French Cameroun and its criminal agents within and without to account.

Finally, Cameroon Concord News Group gives notice that it will strongly oppose any attempts to shift the focus of this struggle from the core issues listed in the editorial even if that shift is engineered by the Interim Government or its leadership.

Biyanization: Algeria’s Bouteflika to seek fifth presidential term 0

Algeria’s ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is to seek a fifth term in April elections, state media announced Sunday, despite health issues that have kept him largely out of the public eye for years.

The 81-year-old head of state, in power since 1999, declared his widely expected candidacy in a message to the nation that Algeria’s official APS news agency said it would release later the same day.

The president said he would set up an “inclusive national conference” to address “political, economic, and social” issues and “propose an enrichment of the constitution,” APS reported.

Bouteflika, who uses a wheelchair and has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, had remained quiet about whether he would be a candidate in the lead-up to the April 18 poll.

The country’s ruling coalition — which includes the president’s National Liberation Front — lent its backing to Bouteflika earlier this month.

Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia has said Bouteflika’s health was not “an obstacle” to performing presidential duties.

Retired General Ali Ghediri, 64, was the first to announce his candidacy after the presidency set the election date.

The Movement for the Society of Peace Party will also take part, backing its candidate Abderrazak Makri. It has said Bouteflika would be unable to handle the demands of another term in office because of ill health.

The country’s oldest opposition party, the Front of Socialist Forces, announced on January 25 that it would not field a candidate and called for an “active, intensive, and peaceful boycott.”
