Anti-war activists in New York City protest against Trump’s Middle East policy ⁰

A large number of anti-war activists have stage a demonstration in New York City’s Times Square, demanding an end to US military actions in the Middle East.

The demonstration was held on Wednesday amid US President Donald Trump’s aggressive actions against Iran that have increased concerns of spiraling out of control into a new full-fledged war in the Middle East.

Protesters were chanting, “Trump, Pence, out now.”

The anti-war activists were holding banners which read, “No war on Iran! No assassinations! No interventions! No sanctions!”, “No more drones,” “Fight climate change, not Iran,” and “Trump, Pence, out now.”

Amanda, one of the protesters, said, “People in this country need to oppose all war and crimes against humanity.”

“But not just that. We here are part of the ‘Out Now’ movement, we are opposing the war against Iran, on the basis that Trump and Pence are fascists they need to be driven out of the white house,” Amanda added.

Another protester said, “We are against war with Iran, we have made it clear time and time again, that these wars do not benefit anyone except for that people that can profit of them, and American people are very conscious of that.”

Tensions between the US and Iran escalated after Trump ordered the assassination of a top Iranian commander who had played a leading role in the Middle East in the fight against Daesh terrorists.

Fears of a new war in the Middle East emerged following the assassination of General Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) last week.

On Saturday, Trump said that his military would hit “very important” targets, including cultural heritage sites, if the Iranians want to take a retaliatory action against the assassination of Lieutenant General Soleimani.

Early on Wednesday, Iran responded to the assassination of Soleimani, the Middle East’s most prominent anti-terror commander, striking the American airbase of Ain al-Assad in Anbar province in western Iraq and another in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Meanwhile, a coalition of progressive advocacy groups in the US have called for massive rallies across the country to protest Trump’s “military brinksmanship” against Iran and demand immediate de-escalation of tensions with Tehran.

“We will not be forced into another war,” said the coalition, led by MoveOn, Indivisible, Win Without War, and other groups.

“On Thursday, January 9, at 5 p.m local time, the anti-war majority in this country will get visible to oppose Trump’s war and say #NoWarWithIran,” the coalition said.

As of Wednesday, over 180 protests have been planned across the US, up from just 50 when the protests were first announced Tuesday afternoon.

Militant attack in Nigerian town kills 20 soldiers, displaces 1,000 residents ⁰

About 20 soldiers were killed and nearly 1,000 people made homeless in a militant attack on a town in northeastern Nigeria, two residents and a military source said on Wednesday.

The militants entered Monguno in Borno state posing as a convoy of soldiers on Tuesday evening, the sources said. They then attacked troops inside the town, destroying at least 750 homes in the process.

Resident Gumati Sadu said people fled into the bush for safety during the fighting and that three civilians were killed by stray bullets.

A military spokesman declined to comment.

The West Africa Province (ISWAP) claimed responsibility for the attack on its Amaq news agency.

It said that one of its militants detonated a car bomb in the town, killing at least 8 soldiers and destroying 3 armored vehicles.

The group also said it had seized a vehicle, weapons and ammunition before leaving the town.

ISWAP split from the extremist group Boko Haram in 2016 and has since staged its own frequent attacks in the region.

Boko Haram’s decade-long insurgency campaign has killed thousands and displaced millions in northeastern Nigeria.

Thousands in Monguno had already been displaced from their homes elsewhere in Borno state by militants. Aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres warned last year that many thousands in Monguno lacked proper shelter, water, sanitation and food.

Suspected Ambazonia Fighters attack Gendarmerie Post in French Cameroun ⁰

A gendarmerie unit in the Noun Division, East Cameroon, reportedly came under attack.

Heavily armed men suspected of being Ambazonia Restoration fighters from Southern Cameroons stormed the area as drunk East Cameroonian gendarm officers slept on duty.

A source says the attackers were nine in number and some even spoke French which has led many to think that they could just be some East Cameroonian robbers seeking better weapons.

The attackers made away with sophisticated weapons which will surely be used in the days ahead to commit some violent crimes.

UK concerned about ‘reported casualties’ in Iran attack on US bases ⁰

The United Kingdom has expressed concerns about “reported casualties” following Iran’s attack on two US bases in Iraq carried out to retaliate Washington’s assassination of top Iranian anti-terror commander, Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said that “tens of surface-to-surface missiles” were fired at the US airbase of Ain al-Assad in Anbar province in western Iraq early on Wednesday.

The attack was confirmed by US officials.

Following the incident, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab condemned the strike, calling on Iran not to repeat what he called “reckless and dangerous” strikes.

“We condemn this attack on Iraqi military bases hosting Coalition – including British – forces,” Raab said. “We are concerned by reports of casualties and use of ballistic missiles.”

“We urge Iran not to repeat these reckless and dangerous attacks, and instead to pursue urgent de-escalation.”

The IRGC has called for a complete withdrawal of US troops from the Arab country, asserting that it would not differentiate between the US and Israel in retaliating against the assassination of the Iranian national hero.

IRGC targets US airbases in Iraq in response to assassination of General Soleimani

“We warn US allies providing bases for the [American] terrorist army… that any country serving as the origin of bellicose and aggressive attacks in any form against the Islamic Republic of Iran will be targeted,” read the IRGC statement.

The Pentagon claimed that it would take necessary measures to protect US military forces amid heightened tensions in the region.

Iran summons UK ambassador over British support for Soleimani’s assassination

On Tuesday, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Robert Macaire, Britain’s ambassador to Tehran, over the support that a number of top UK officials have voiced for the US assassination of General Soleimani.

This came following the unacceptable remarks by the UK prime minister, foreign secretary, and defense secretary about Trump’s order to assassinate Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions.

In his meeting with Macaire, the Iranian Foreign Minister’s assistant for European affairs strongly condemned UK officials’ remarks, saying the US’ move violated international law and Iraq’s national sovereignty.

Ukraine jet crashes in Iran, killing at least 170: media ⁰

A Ukrainian plane carrying at least 170 people crashed shortly after take off in Tehran killing all on board, Iran state media reported.

The Boeing 737 had left Tehran’s international airport bound for Kiev, semi-official news agency ISNA said, adding that 10 ambulances were sent to the crash site.

“Obviously it is impossible that passengers” on flight PS-752 are alive, the head of Red Crescent, Morteza Salimi, told semi-official news agency ISNA, adding that 170 passengers and crew had boarded the plane.

State news agency IRNA said 167 passengers and nine crew members had boarded the plane, which was operated by Ukraine International Airlines.

Press TV, state television’s English-language news broadcaster, said the plane went down in the vicinity of Parand, a city in Tehran province.

The crash was likely to have been caused by “technical difficulties”, it reported, citing Ali Khashani, spokesman for Imam Khomeini International Airport.

“The plane caught fire after crashing,” said Press TV. A video aired by the state media broadcaster appeared to show the plane already on fire, falling from the sky.

Iranian state television showed footage from the site of the crash of Red Crescent search and rescue teams scouring an open field with debris strewn across it.

American airline manufacturer Boeing tweeted: “We are aware of the media reports out of Iran and we are gathering more information.”

– Escalating tensions –

The crash came shortly after Iran said it fired missiles at Iraqi bases in revenge for the killing of one of the Islamic republic’s top military commanders in a US drone strike on Friday.

Following the missile strikes, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it was banning US-registered carriers from flying over Iraq, Iran and the Gulf after rocket attacks on US forces in Iraq.

“The (FAA) issues Notices to Airmen tonight outlining flight restrictions that prohibit US civil aviation operators from operating in the airspace over Iraq, Iran and the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman,” it said in a statement.

“The FAA will continue closely monitoring events in the Middle East.”

Iran launched the missiles after a US drone strike killed Qasem Soleimani, a hugely popular figure who headed the foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed “severe revenge” for the assassination and declared three days of mourning following the assassination which shocked the Islamic republic.

The assassination of Soleimani set off an escalating war of words between Iran and the US.

In Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani on Monday warned Trump to “never threaten” Iran, after the US leader issued a US strike list of 52 targets in the Islamic republic.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirm missile attacks against US forces in Iraq ⁰

Iran launched a missile attack on U.S.-led forces in Iraq in the early hours of Wednesday in retaliation for the U.S. drone strike on an Iranian commander whose killing has raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East.

Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles from its territory against at least two Iraqi facilities hosting U.S.-led coalition personnel at about 1:30 a.m. (2230 GMT), the U.S. military said.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in a tweet late on Tuesday that an assessment of casualties and damage from the strikes was under way and that he would make a statement on Wednesday morning.

“All is well!” Trump, who visited the al-Asad air base in December 2018, said in the Twitter post.

One source said early indications were of no U.S. casualties. Other U.S. officials declined to comment.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps confirmed they fired the missiles in retaliation for last week’s killing of Qassem Soleimani, according to a statement on state TV.

The force advised the United States to withdraw its troops from the region to prevent more deaths and warned U.S. allies including Israel not to allow attacks from their territories.

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement that the bases targeted were al-Asad air base and another facility in Erbil, Iraq.

“As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies in the region.”

Hours earlier on Tuesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the United States should anticipate retaliation from Iran over Friday’s killing in Iraq of Soleimani, commander of the elite Quds Force.

“I think we should expect that they will retaliate in some way, shape or form,” he told a news briefing at the Pentagon, adding that such retaliation could be through Iran-backed proxy groups outside of Iran or “by their own hand.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran “took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter”, targeting the bases where the attack against its citizens and senior officials was launched.

“We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression,” he wrote in a post on Twitter.

If the U.S. military was indeed spared casualties, and Iran has completed its threatened retaliation for the U.S. drone strike on Soleimani, as Zarif suggested, there might be an opportunity for Washington and Tehran to seek an off-ramp to their increasingly violent confrontation.

Asian stock markets, which had been roiled by the attack, pared some of their losses after the tweets from Trump and Zarif. U.S. crude prices also retreated after surging almost 5% on worries any conflict could cut oil supplies.

‘We will take revenge’

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it would ban U.S. carriers from operating in the airspace over Iraq, Iran, the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Singapore Airlines had already diverted all flight routes from Iranian airspace.

Democrats in the U.S. Congress and some of the party’s presidential contenders warned about the escalating conflict.

“Closely monitoring the situation following bombings targeting U.S. troops in Iraq,” U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Twitter. “We must ensure the safety of our service members, including ending needless provocations from the Administration and demanding that Iran cease its violence. America & world cannot afford war.”

Soleimani, a pivotal figure in orchestrating Iran’s long-standing campaign to drive U.S. forces out of Iraq, was also responsible for building up Tehran’s network of proxy armies across the Middle East.

He was a national hero to many Iranians but viewed as a dangerous villain by Western governments opposed to Iran’s arc of influence running across the Levant and into the Gulf region.

A senior Iranian official said on Tuesday that Tehran was considering several scenarios to avenge Soleimani’s death. Other senior figures have said the Islamic Republic would match the scale of the killing when it responds, but that it would choose the time and place.

“We will take revenge, a hard and definitive revenge,” the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, General Hossein Salami, told throngs who crowded the streets for Soleimani’s funeral on Tuesday in Kerman, his hometown in southeastern Iran.

Soleimani’s burial went ahead after several hours of delay following a stampede that killed at least 56 people and injured more than 210, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency.

Iran TV reported Soleimani was buried after the missile attacks. “His revenge was taken and now he can rest in peace,” it said.

The missiles were launched on Wednesday at the same time that he was killed last on Friday.

Soleimani’s body had been taken to holy Shi’ite Muslim cities in Iraq and Iran, as well as the Iranian capital, Tehran, before arriving to be buried in the city cemetery’s “martyrs section”, according to the semi-official news agency ISNA.

In each place, huge numbers of people filled thoroughfares, chanting: “Death to America” and weeping with emotion. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wept as he led prayers in Tehran.

Prompted by the strong public backlash over Soleimani’s killing on Iraqi soil, lawmakers in Iraq voted on Sunday to demand a removal of all foreign forces from the country.

More than 5,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq along with other foreign forces as part of a coalition that has trained and backed up Iraqi security forces against the threat of Islamic State militants.

Some 115 German soldiers are stationed in Erbil and all are fine, a spokesman for Bundeswehr operations said.

A NATO official told Reuters it would move some of its several hundred trainers out of Iraq. Canada said on Tuesday some of its 500 Iraq-based forces would be temporarily moved to Kuwait for safety reasons.

U.S. officials have said Soleimani was killed because of solid intelligence indicating forces under his command planned attacks on U.S. targets in the region, although they have provided no evidence.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said 13 “revenge scenarios” were being considered, Fars news agency reported. Even the weakest option would prove “a historic nightmare for the Americans”, he said.

Southern Cameroons Crisis: Success Nkongho betrayed President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and is trying to convince Field Marshal to down arms ⁰

A source close to Nkongho Success in Yaounde has contacted the Cameroon Concord News Group to denounce what he claims is Mr. Nkongho Success’ betrayal of the Southern Cameroons president, Julius Ayuk Tabe in particular and the revolution in general.

The source, who has elected anonymity and has also infiltrated the Cameroon anti-terrorism squad, says Success Nkongho is a demon whose greed is destroying a revolution whose success would have benefitted all Southern Cameroonians.

While in Nigeria, Success befriended Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe and earned his confidence, making it hard for Mr. Ayuk Tabe to ever think he could betray him.

Success worked with the anti-terrorism squad to bring down Julius Ayuk Tabe and his team since he understood Mr. Ayuk Tabe’s schedule and was considered by Mr. Ayuk Tabe as his right hand man and junior brother since both of them are from Manyu Division.

After Julius was roped in, he was charged by the Yaounde government to help break the revolution’s neck and he has been on the payroll of the Yaounde government for a long time.

Mr. Success Nkongho who claims he holds a PhD entered into a special deal with the government aimed at totally destroying the revolution and the return of the 87 refugees is part of the strategy to hoodwink the international community into believing that Southern Cameroonians living in Nigeria are ready and willing to return home.

While working with the government, he laid out all his conditions and the government accepted everything he asked for.

The deal almost fell through when Mr. Success Nkongho insisted that if he had to return to Cameroon, he must come with a bunch of refugees, a group he now claims voluntarily opted to return home.

Currently, Mr. Success Nkongho is talking with Field Marshal and the government is looking forward to field marshal downing his weapons.

The talks are ongoing, but Field Marshal has some conditions which are very challenging to the government, including the pardoning of all his fighters.

Mr. Success, who has never really succeeded at anything, is currently being protected by the Yaounde government where he has been offered decent accommodation and financial assistance to enable him live a decent life that might convince other core Southern Cameroonians.

His entire family had been moved to Yaounde by the Yaounde government before he landed at the Nsimalen International Airport on December 31, 2019, as part of the deal he signed with the government, including his brother Besong Roland who was a motorcycle rider in Mamfe town.

Another brother of his Tanyi Emmanuel is also living in Yaounde and all of them are having state protection due to Mr. Success’ betrayal of the cause.

It should be pointed out that the son of Mr. Besong Roland, Success Nkongho’s brother, is still within the ranks of Amba fighters in Manyu Division and there are fears that he could be a decoy working for his uncle.

A native of Etemetek, a small village some 7 km from Mamfe town, Mr. Success Nkongho grew up in New Layout, Mamfe town, where he is notorious for his dishonesty and lies.

His mother, who was also dishonest, married twice and this caused great confusion in the family.

Indeed, the man who was supposed to marry Mr. Success Nkongho’s mother was from Equatorial Guinea.

He came to Mamfe and did all the traditional rituals. He paid the bride price and went back to Equatorial Guinea where he was working as a hunter.

While he was back in Equatorial Guinea, another man, Mr. Nkongho’s father, came and performed the same rituals and got married to his mother.

When she was pregnant with Success, certain things went wrong. She was pregnant with Success for 12 months and this was attributed to her dishonesty.

It was assumed that the Equatorial Guinean had done some mysterious things to her and the long pregnancy was a punishment for her dishonesty.

Ossing Massacre: Ambazonia Restoration forces on the trail of the killers ⁰

Pressure is mounting on the killers of the Ossing regent chief who was killed last month, as genuine Southern Cameroons restoration forces have jumped into the fray to track down the criminals who are taking advantage of the chaos reigning in the two English-speaking regions of the country. Restoration forces have vowed to root out these rogue elements who have given them a bad name and who have nothing to do with the fighting on the ground.

Citizens of Ossing had identified the killers whose motives are still unclear. However, a video produced and released by the rogues has confirmed that they were indeed from Kembong, a town some 4 km from Ossing. The video is also helping government law enforcement agencies who have vowed to bring the killers to book in their investigations.

The misguided and rogue elements accuse the regent chief of collaborating with the Yaounde government in its fight against secessionists, but this version has been discounted by people who were close to the regent chief. As a chief or his representative, the regent was automatically supposed to be answerable to the senior divisional officer and he had the responsibility of answering any questions on the city of Ossing and its residents. Basing their faulty and unreasonable logic on that, the rogues killed a man who had nothing to do with the rebellion that is still playing out in the two English-speaking regions of the country.

According to experts who have analyzed the video released by the killers, the plan was not to kill the regent chief, but after having driven some bullets into his leg which led to heavy bleeding, the defenseless regent chief was left to die in his own pool of blood. The video, which has gone viral, underscores the need to root out those violent elements that are gradually killing the rebellion with their atrocities which are making the Yaoundé government look like a saint.

For some time now, rogue elements taking advantage of the ugly situation in the two English-speaking regions have been milking the population, sometimes asking villagers to contribute to the war efforts with money they do not have. This is something genuine restoration forces never do. These rogue elements have been kidnapping innocent citizens and they have been asking for ransom and the amounts are indeed mind-blowing.

According to restoration forces who have contacted the Cameroon Concord News Group, the Ossing massacre is one situation that is hurting their credibility and they are determined to demonstrate that they do not have anything to do with this heinous crime. They have also indicated that penalties for such crimes will be stiff and anybody who is directly or indirectly involved will have to face the wrath of the law.

Investigations are currently underway and both the country’s law enforcement agents and restoration forces are on the trail of the fake fighters who committed the abominable and irreversible act. As both groups turn the heat on the killers, more stories are gradually emerging and it is becoming obvious that the trail might have started in Kembong, but it will end in Ossing as it is suspected that the masterminds are those who disagreed with the regent chief.

French Cameroun: Boko Haram attacks kill 12 in Fotokol ⁰

The death toll from the Fotokol El Beid Bridge suicide attack on Monday evening has been painted as dire by the Biya Francophone regime. There were a dozen dead and twenty injured. French Cameroun administrative authorities say it is one of the deadliest suicide attacks seen since 2018.

The attack was reportedly staged on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the El-Beid Bridge between Fotokol (Cameroon) and Gambaru (Nigeria), shortly after 4 p.m. local time (15 GMT) in the main market. Cameroon Concord News gathered from security sources that the victims were mainly traders, children and women.

The first provisional assessment reported that 12 people were killed and 26 wounded. Community sources are trying to establish that it was an explosion of a grenade handled by two kids.

According to a more informed security source, “the bomb carrier refused to submit to a body search.”

This is not the first time that the border town of Fotokol has been the target of attacks. In July 2015, a double suicide bombing killed at least 12 people near the market in Fotokol and in 2017 five children were killed in another attack in Fotokol.

Fotokol is one of the localities in the Far North of Cameroon most exposed to incursions and atrocities of all kinds attributed to Boko Haram.

Yaounde: Suspicion grows as Ambazonian defections increase ⁰

Thousands of Ambazonians are increasingly suspicious of Cameroon’s refugee return operation that has resulted in the return of some 87 refugees from Nigeria. On Tuesday, December 31, 2019, 87 refugees and former Ambazonian combatants living in Nigeria returned to Yaoundé on a special flight chartered by the Yaoundé government. Among the returning refugees were Success Nkongho and a self-styled General Namberee who has been talking like a parrot ever since he landed in Yaoundé.

On hand to welcome the seemingly desperate returnees and their children were several personalities of the ruling CPDM crime syndicate led by Paul Atanga Nji, the country’s territorial administration minister.

Speaking to the press upon arrival in Yaounde, Success Nkongho, the so-called spokesperson of the Southern Cameroons returning refugees said that “we are very proud to be here in Yaoundé. We are moved by the warm welcome. We did not expect it.”

Success Nkongho, a con-man who also doubles as an unsuccessful pastor, is known to have been working for the Yaoundé government in Nigeria, with several sources reporting that he had betrayed Southern Cameroons leaders who were kidnapped in Abuja, Nigeria, and returned to Yaounde in 2018.

He added that “I love Cameroon and I decided to commit myself to peace,” but many observers and close associates of Mr. Nkongho clearly indicate that he wants to use the peace process to whitewash his black image. He has been involved in many shady deals in the past and has robbed many people of their money through visa schemes that have left many poor and heart-broken.

It should be recalled that Mr. Success Nkongho has been seeking to have a foreign passport to protect himself ever since the Southern Cameroons crisis hit the international stage. He was in Abidjan, Cote d”Ivoire, in 2019 to see if he could obtain an Ivorian passport, but his efforts did not yield any results as the Ivorian system is computerized and Ivorian security systems have been refined over the years.

He has also contacted many people in the USA and Europe to see if he could have a way of leaving the African continent, but it seemed nature is not smiling at him. With many children and a wife, Mr. Nkongho could not have the possibility to take everybody abroad due to financial constraints. The peace process is therefore a possibility for him to walk away from the stress he has been experiencing in Nigeria.

The Yaoundé drama also witnessed a popular Ambazonian ex-combatant, General Nambere, expressing his gratitude to the 86-year-old dictator, Paul Biya, who has been in power for 37 years and has nothing to show for such a long stay in power. Namberee, a cash-strapped, desperate and ambitious illiterate also pledged to “work for a return to peace in the country.” Many analysts doubt his sincerity and have been asking if he has the means and possibility of achieving such a lofty goal.

It should be recalled that other Ambazonian fighters who laid down their arms were presented to the general public during the Major National Dialogue. They were on media shows in East Cameroon and some were even presented as national heroes on the state-owned Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV). Yaoundé has revealed that the total number of Ambazonian combatants who have laid down their arms stands between 2,000 and 3,000.

The official Yaoundé government position is that many of the Southern Cameroonian fighters who surrendered did so to save the peace, but the reality is a far cry from what the Yaounde government is presenting. Many of the so-called former fighters have received large sums of money from the Yaounde government and others had been paid to stage the comedy that has not convinced the international community.
