Football: Liverpool on course for Champions League final after 2-0 win over Villarreal 0

An own goal and a Sadio Mane strike earned Liverpool a 2-0 victory in their Champions League semi-final first-leg against Villarreal on Wednesday, putting Juergen Klopp’s side on course for their third European Cup final in five seasons.

Villarreal defended in numbers in the first half to frustrate the six-times European Cup winners, with Thiago Alcantara going closest to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous strike from distance that hit the post.

Liverpool turned it up a notch after the break and moments after Brazilian midfielder Fabinho had seen one effort ruled out for offside, Jordan Henderson’s cross was deflected into his own net by Pervis Estupinan to break Villarreal’s resistance.

Able to express themselves with the deadlock broken, Mohamed Salah threaded a sublime pass through for Mane to put the game beyond the visitors 133 seconds later.

Liverpool had chances to make the result more comprehensive, but will be firm favourites to finish the job in next week’s second leg in Spain.

US: Biden, Clintons lead tributes to Madeleine Albright at memorial service

US: Biden, Clintons lead tributes to Madeleine Albright at memorial service 0

President Joe Biden called former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright a “force of nature” on Wednesday at a memorial service attended by former presidents in honor of the first woman to serve as the United States’ top diplomat.

Albright, who served as secretary of state from 1997 to 2001, died last month of cancer. The professor, businesswoman, mother and grandmother was heralded as a trailblazer after her death.

Biden praised Albright for her grace, humanity and intellect, and said she changed the tide of history.

“Her story was America’s story,” he said. “She loved to speak about America as the indispensable nation. … It was about gratitude for all this country made possible for her. It was a testament to her belief in the endless possibilities that only America could help unlock around the world.”

Biden, who is leading the US effort to support Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, said Albright was a big reason why NATO alliances are so strong today.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also gave tributes. Albright served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997 during President Clinton’s first four-year term before becoming secretary of state, and was an active supporter of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns.

Albright and her family fled the Nazis in her native Czechoslovakia during World War Two. They eventually settled in the United States, where Albright grew to become a tough-talking diplomat, famous for a sometimes sharp tongue and a collection of pins she would wear to send political messages.

Albright’s memorial service was held at the Washington National Cathedral. More than 1,400 people were expected to attend, according to a spokesperson for the family, including foreign ministers, ambassadors and members of Congress.

The family requested that attendees wear masks inside the cathedral; Washington has experienced a dramatic uptick in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks.

Albright’s three daughters were to give tributes. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was to give a reading from the Bible.

Former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama and former Vice President Al Gore attended along with current administration officials including Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

FIFA World Cup: FECAFOOT threatens to sue Algeria over allegations of match-fixing

FIFA World Cup: FECAFOOT threatens to sue Algeria over allegations of match-fixing 0

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o said on Monday that Cameroon is appalled by allegations of match-fixing by Algerian football authorities.

Algerian football coach Djamel Belmadi had told Algerian TV that Cameroon’s 2022 World Cup playoff win over Algeria “was a conspiracy between two or three persons”.

Belmadi argued that Algeria’s home defeat this March in Blida was distorted by the referee’s performance.

“FECAFOOT disputes these defamatory allegations instilled in an allusive way and formulated in a repetitive way by the Algerian football leaders. Cameroon reserves the right to bring the matter before the FIFA Ethics Committee in the coming days,” Eto’o said in a statement on Monday night.

“FECAFOOT urges Algerian football leaders to use legal means to exercise their recognized rights,” he added.

Biya regime designates Southern Cameroons as an economic disaster zone

Biya regime designates Southern Cameroons as an economic disaster zone 0

The ongoing crisis in the north-west of Cameroon in the anglophone region, coupled with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has pushed the price of stable foods beyond the reach of many.

In response, the government has designated the anglophone region an economic disaster zone.

At the busy Bamenda food market, hawkers position themselves at the market gate, selling basic home products like washing soap, while shop owners serve customers inside their shops.

Shoppers come here in the hope of buying local produce cheaper.  But for more than three months the prices of local produce like plantains and tomatoes as well as basic household commodities have skyrocketed.

Food prices rise

The rise in food prices started late last year, when groundnut oil prices rose from 25,000CFA (38 euros)/gallon to 27,000CFA (40 euros), says shopper Dorothy Ngu, adding that the prices were higher than neighbouring Douala or Bafoussam.

“When we ask why, they say it is our road, especially the road to reach here –  it is horrible,” says Ngu.

“Palm oil is a local product. It used to be cheap, but they say they have to increase their own prices because if they don’t sell it at a higher price how will they buy their own things in the market?” she adds.

For one transporter who uses the Bamenda-Ekok-Enugu highway, the frequent road blocks imposed by both security services and separatist fighters adds to the costs of the goods he transports. This prevents Nigerian goods from entering the city.

Elsewhere on the Bafoussam-Bamenda highway, where staples from other towns come in, the roads are in terrible condition and have not been maintained, Elvis Muluh tells Africa Calling podcast, pointing to his tyres.

“These are vehicle tyres. We buy them for up to 50,000CFA (45 euros) but it doesn’t last for one month because of deplorable state of the road,” says Muluh.

“The bad state of the road and numerous military checkpoints accounts for the increase in the prices of commodities, since we have to charge higher for transporting the goods,” he says, adding that he wished there were fewer checkpoints.

Anglophone crisis

Most businesses in Bamenda, the north-west’s capital, have been shut down and relocated to safer areas after the kidnapping of many business people. Some have also had their places of business burnt down.

Peaceful protests calling out discrimination in municipal jobs five years ago led to a brutal crackdown by security forces, resulting in separatists taking up arms against the central government.

Within the context of the crisis, many city dwellers now host internally displaced persons, who have fled their towns and villages and have come to the regional capital.

Residents have more mouths to feed, but with the current increase in prices, even the most basic food staples are out of reach.

“We are facing price hikes in the market which is not backed by much money in our pockets. For example, I will start with magi beef cubes. They have gone from €1.23 (800CFA) to €1.50 (900CFA) a packet,” says market-goer Laura Ngwa.

“We are actually facing difficulties preparing a decent meal for the family.”

Ukrainian wheat ban

The situation is worsening with the recent increase in the price of flour, meaning people can’t afford to buy much bread.

“Bread is very expensive; if you don’t have 1000CFA (1.50 euros) now you can’t afford breakfast for your family. From every indication it’s high time we go back to our farms and cultivate sweet potatoes to serve for breakfast,” says Thomas Mbah, a resident of Bamenda.

“Even the local product from cassava known as garri is now more expensive than rice.”

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has forced prices up as has the impact of Covid-19 says Abel Ghogomu, a local government representative in charge of trade in the region. Ukraine and Russia are large-scale producers of wheat flour.

Before the war, they had a huge market in Africa, including Cameroon. In order to reduce costs of these imported commodities, Ghogomu says measures have been taken to help Cameroonian consumers.

“There is a tax exemption on products that are imported, wheat and other things so that it should reflect on our prices,” he says.

He met with the North West Bakers association, who deal with wheat and bread-making.

“We were in the field disguised as consumers, and we went to shops to check on this. Bread which should cost 125CFA that is 200g has been raised up to 250CF,” he adds.

Southern Cameroons: Yaoundé says Maritime business has collapsed, oil business has all collapsed, palm oil fields now under Amba control

Southern Cameroons: Yaoundé says Maritime business has collapsed, oil business has all collapsed, palm oil fields now under Amba control 0

Authorities in Cameroon say anglophone separatists have joined forces with Nigerian militants to shut down nearly all trade across the two countries’ border. Cameroon depends on Nigeria for 70% of basic commodities and most of them are transported across the land border. Authorities say about 90% of trade has been halted as militants from both sides attack and abduct merchants.

Njume Peter Ambang is a lawmaker from Cameroon’s restive southwest region on the border with Nigeria. He said fighters within the past two months have taken control of many businesses, including palm oil plantations in Ndian, a division in the Southwest region.

“Maritime business has collapsed. The oil business has all collapsed. Palm oil fields have been seized by the separatists. They harvest the crops, they mill and sell. These guys are working with area boys (armed groups) in Nigeria,” he said.

Ambang was speaking in the Ndian capital, Mundemba, Sunday during a meeting to plead with local fighters to drop their guns and stop harassing merchants.

Cameroon’s military says several hundred fighters chased from towns and villages during raids by government troops relocated to the border with Nigeria. The military says the fighters have killed at least two dozen merchants and abducted scores of others for ransom since January.

Nigeria and Cameroon have promised to crush all separatists who do not surrender.

The two countries’ governments announced in February 2021 that they would work together to combat separatists and armed groups.

Cameroon this week said it deployed more troops to the border to protect civilians, merchants and their goods.

The Holy Father cancels events again due to knee pain

The Holy Father cancels events again due to knee pain 0

Pope Francis was forced to clear his diary for the second time in less than a week on Tuesday due to recurring knee pain, the Vatican said.

“Due to knee pain, and following medical advice, Pope Francis has suspended today’s activities,” which included his participation in a meeting of his advisory Council of Cardinals, the press office said.

The 85-year-old pontiff, who in the past few days has been seen grimacing from pain on several occasions, had on Friday also cleared his schedule to undergo medical checks.

Francis, who was elected pope in 2013, cancelled a trip to Florence in February due to what the Vatican called “acute gonalgia”.

The pain in his right knee has recently prevented him from attending events and presiding over religious celebrations.

He also suffers from hip pain which forces him to limp and last July, spent 10 days in hospital after undergoing colon surgery.

However, the pontiff has a packed schedule including overseas events, visiting Malta earlier this month with further trips planned to the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Canada, Lebanon and Kazakhstan later this year.

Two Cameroon gov’t soldiers killed in Amba attack in Eyumojock 0

A spokesman for the Cameroon government army on Tuesday confirmed two soldiers were killed following an attack by Amba fighters in Eyumojock Sub Division in Manyu.

In a communiqué issued in the French language, the Cameroon government army spokesman said Ambazonia forces attacked a military checkpoint at Mkpot Village, a community in Eyumojock Sub Division, engaging them in a gunfight.

The troops were deployed to Mkpot at the request of the village corrupt traditional ruler who recently donated some of his blood money for the installation ceremony of the Bishop of Mamfe.

Sadly, during the firefight that ensued, two Cameroon government soldiers- one identified as Master Sergeant Owono Etienne, license number 11/15690 paid the supreme price.

Ambazonia Revolutionary Guards is the paramilitary wing of the Southern Cameroons Interim Government led by Vice President Dabney Yerima, seeking to make a state in English speaking Cameroon and form the independent nation of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia.

Attack on Batibo, Guzang and Awom: Ambazonia Interim Gov’t calls for mass mobilization to confront Biya and French Cameroun

Attack on Batibo, Guzang and Awom: Ambazonia Interim Gov’t calls for mass mobilization to confront Biya and French Cameroun 0

The Southern Cameroons Interim Government says all Southern Cameroonians in the diaspora must mobilize to confront the French Cameroun occupation and colonial settlers and to head to all international organizations in their host countries in droves to raise awareness of French Cameroun’s intensified assaults on Southern Cameroonians.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Vice President Dabney Yerima said the Southern Cameroons diaspora population should be ready to begin massive protests in various capitals in the West.

“Southern Cameroons unity and resistance in confronting the Biya French Cameroun occupation will deter the Francophone political elites from implementing their malicious schemes targeting the people of Southern Cameroons” the statement read.

Earlier on Monday, Francophone army soldiers once again attacked Southern Cameroonians in Batibo, Awom, and Guzang. Seven civilians were reportedly killed by Cameroon government troops and several others were arrested with some summarily executed.

Cameroon Concord News correspondent in Widikum said homes were ransacked, money, food stuff and other valuables taken away. He also affirmed that bullets injured 19 people, including one cleric while a dozen suffered from tear gas inhalation.

Situation in Southern Cameroons similar to lead-up to the KNDP Crisis

Situation in Southern Cameroons similar to lead-up to the KNDP Crisis 0

A senior Ambazonian official has hit out at CPDM Southern Cameroons elite for fraternizing President Biya and his Francophone regime in Yaoundé.

“There are two approaches among the people of Southern Cameroons. The majority resists the occupying French Cameroun regime, but the other front, namely the CPDM Southern Cameroons elites and AGOVC, are La Republique du Cameroun’s mercenaries” Dr. Patrick Ayuk, a member of the Dabney Yerima-led Ambazonia Interim Government told Cameroon Concord News on Monday.

The first front, Dr. Patrick Ayuk said, is ready to make all sacrifices to expel the occupying Biya French Cameroun regime from the entire Federal Republic of Ambazonia, but the latter does not believe in the liberation of Southern Cameroons.

The senior Dabney Yerima adviser said the current situation in Southern Cameroons is similar to the lead-up to the KNDP crisis of 1963 after French Cameroun secret agents had murdered the Secretary General Zacharia Abendong.

The French Cameroun anti KNDP operation saw the emergence of ST Muna and his group that eventually auctioned Southern Cameroons.

The occupying French Cameroun regime says it is committed to the status quo of a one and indivisible Cameroon and nothing will change about it.

Dr. Patrick Ayuk furthered that the Southern Cameroons diaspora failure to back up Ground Zero in the face of the French Cameroun military onslaught is delaying the mission to Buea.
