The conflict in Southern Cameroons is still raging and the killing is still going on.

In Mamfe, two soldiers were shot dead by Southern Cameroonian insurgents in Egbekaw, a neighborhood of Mamfe, and these killings have triggered a wave of arson by frustrated Cameroon army soldiers who are unable to find those who have sent their colleagues to an earlier grave.

Mamfe remains a hotspot, especially the Southern Cameroonian president, Julius Ayuk Tabe, a native of Mamfe, is still in the dungeons of East Cameroons.

Similarly, there was also a violent exchange of fire between army soldiers and Southern Cameroonian insurgents in Ediki, a small town some 20 miles from the city of Kumba.

The stand-off lasted some two hours with travelers being unable to travel freely.

Morocco’s national football team of local-based players has eliminated Cameroon to reach the final of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The Moroccan team won 4-0 against the tournament’s host. The game took place this evening, February 4, at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium, on Cameroon’s western coast.

Wednesday’s win extends Morocco’s undefeated run to 12 games in CHAN competitions — 10 wins and two draws. The last time Morocco lost in the CHAN dates back to the 2016 tournament, when they lost 0-1 against Cote d’Ivoire in the group stage. This is the longest unbeaten run ever in the history of the competition.

Today’s win also makes Morocco the first team in CHAN history to reach two consecutive finals. One more win would make the Moroccan team the first to win two consecutive CHAN titles, as well.

The final game of the competition will put the Atlas Lions against Mali on Sunday, February 7, at 8 p.m. (Moroccan time).

Mali earned a spot in the final after beating Guinea earlier today through a penalty shootout (5-4). The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Having won the previous CHAN in 2018, Morocco entered this year’s competition with their eyes locked on the trophy. No result other than winning the tournament would satisfy Moroccans.

With only one game now separating Morocco from defending its title, expectations are at their highest.

Morocco reached this advanced stage of the competition after finishing the group stage at the top of Group C, ahead of Rwanda, Togo, and Uganda. Before playing against Cameroon, Morocco won 3-1 versus Zambia in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s final opponent of the competition, Mali, ranked first in Group A, ahead of Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Zimbabwe. In the quarter-finals, Mali eliminated Congo through a penalty shootout (5-4) after a tense game that ended in a 0-0 draw.

In an effort to resolve the ongoing border dispute between Cameroon and Nigeria, The Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission will hold an important session in Abuja on 15 February, chaired by the UN Special Representative for West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas. He hopes to complete the process of demarcation of borders before the end of his term in 2021.

Born out of the disagreement over the hydrocarbon-rich Bakassi peninsula, the border dispute had led to an armed conflict between the two countries. Following the 10 October 2002 ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the subsequent bipartisan agreements signed, the UN secretary-general set up a joint commission in November 2002. It was tasked with facilitating the implementation of legal and political decisions. The process of establishing a border along the 2,100km stretch between the two countries was initiated. It is now almost complete.

However, there is still one problem. The commission’s experts have come up against 13 reference points corresponding to 100km of the route. It is important to bear in mind that it was following an agreement signed in 1913 between the two colonial powers of the time, Great Britain and the Germany, that the land and sea borders between Cameroon and Nigeria were drawn.

Breaking the deadlock

As the Bakassi border dispute arose from disagreements over different interpretations of the results collected from using border demarcation instruments, the countries sought the ICJ’s jurisdiction. The ICJ ruled, but even after announcing its decision members of the two delegations have often proposed interpretations that contradicted those of the Court, creating an impasse.

“At first glance, it is on points of reference that the experts disagree. But beware, on the ground, these reference points can determine on which side of the border this or that village, this or that cross-border ethnic community will be located,” says a member of the commission. According to our information, the two delegations have already given assurances that they agree on five reference points. This successful outcome will be made official in Abuja.

However, there are still eight points of reference to be negotiated during the session in the Nigerian capital. Some of them will have an impact on the types of petroleum exploration permits granted by one or both of the two countries to international companies.

Towards a definitive map

If the session in February succeeds in smoothing out all the contentious issues, Cameroon and Nigeria would then be ready to submit a definitive border map to the UN.

Finalising a clearly defined border between the two countries would be no small achievement on a continent where, according to the African Union Border Programme created in 2007, around 70% of the roads are not clearly demarcated. Some are even considered unknown.

This will be the last session chaired by Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the special representative of the secretary-general for West Africa and the Sahel. His term will end in 2021 and he wishes to complete the dossier before his departure.

Former minister Kouna Atangana is now receiving some form of special treatment after corruption charges.  The French Cameroun political elite who also moonlighted as a chartered member of the ruling CPDM consortium of crime syndicates served in Biya’s government until 2018 and was jailed last year in connection with an anticorruption operation, but his legal woes are coming to an end. Why? Kouna Atangana is simply one of theirs with the right connections.

Camtel and the Ministry of Post

The two so-called iron ladies in the Cameroon telecom sector are now at daggers-drawn positions in Yaoundé.  Cameroon Intelligence Report understands that the launch of the new Blue mobile telephone service by national telecommunications company Camtel has brought to a head the tensions between telecoms minister Minette Libom li Likeng, who is close to the presidency, and Camtel director general Judith Yah Sunday-Achidi, one of the wives of former prime minister Simon Achidi Achu, who hails from Southern Cameroons. Despite receiving support from international institutions, Yaounde recorded its worst economic performance in two decades.

With negative growth likely when the statistics come in for 2020 – -1.2% compared to a previously predicted 4.1% – the country is expected to record its worst economic performance in the last two decades.

This is a trend that Yaounde wants to work to reverse in order to stop the recession. The task promises to be difficult in a climate marked by successive falls in oil prices, the halt in growth kinked to the African Cup of Nations’ infrastructure projects and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The only positive aspect of this unfortunate situation is that Cameroon continues to receive support from international institutions. With debt around 40% of GDP, international partners – such as the IMF – strongly supported the country in 2020, while praising its economic discipline.

Infrastructure and industrialisation

In the medium term, Cameroon plans to use its Stratégie Nationale de Développement 2020-2030 – unveiled in mid-November 2020 – to set a new course. It was conceived after the previous plan – the Document de Stratégie pour la Croissance et l’Emploi – failed.

President Paul Biya announced that industrialising the country would be of the utmost priority – which has been put temporarily on hold while the master plan of industrialisation is updated – as it could help stimulate economic growth.

THE RACE TO TRANSFORM

These advances should enable Cameroon to continue its preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament, which it will host in 2022. The building of infrastructure, which was at a standstill for a while, has made considerable progress. In addition, the African Nations Championship, reserved for local players and held in January on already operational sites, served as a trial run.

The Anglophone crisis is still raging

Finally, one remaining question: will the long-awaited decentralisation programme be successful? In early December, regional elections – which were won overwhelmingly by the ruling Rassemblement Démocratique du Peuple Camerounais – were held, but they are unlikely to put an end to the conflict between Yaounde and the English-speaking separatists of Ambazonia.

Re-elected for a seventh term in 2018, President Paul Biya has still not managed to resolve the Anglophone crisis raging in the South-West and North-West regions.

The Biya regime in La Republique du Cameroun is currently opposing the provisional executive committee of the Cameroon Football Federation to be chaired by Senator Albert Mbida.

On 2 February 2021, an extraordinary session of the General Assembly of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) was held via a videoconference and it dealt inter alia with the consequences of the arbitral award rendered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on 15 January 2021.

The 51 members participating in the said session, out of the 74 of the General Assembly reportedly set up a Provisional Executive Committee chaired by Senator Albert Mbida.

Cameroon Concord News understands the Provisional Executive Committee was constituted for a period of three months and has the main task of managing the day-to-day affairs of the Cameroon Football Federation, to revise the statutes, the electoral code and organize an electoral process that is fair, equitable and transparent.

By some strange happenstance, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji reacted to the FECAFOOT zoom meeting by ordering all regional governors to ban all FECAFOOT meetings not loyal to ruling CPDM backed interim president Seydou Mbombouo Njoya.

According to the corrupt regime in French Cameroun, the convening of the said meeting is “contrary” to the CAS ruling of 15 January 2021 with particular reference on point 255.

As a reminder, on 15 January, CAS annulled the electoral process that led to the election of the current executive of FECAFOOT.

In its ruling, CAS gave FIFA, the world football governing body the responsibility to set up either a new normalization committee or to maintain the current executive committee until a electoral process is organized.

Due to the African Championship of Nations tournament, which brings together 16 African national teams without their stars playing outside the continent-a dress rehearsal before the African Cup of Nations, FIFA decided to maintain the current executive of the Cameroon Football Federation by promising to “strictly” supervise its “exceptional mandate”.

This “exceptional” mandate is limited to “tasks” allowing and ensuring “continuity” of current affairs and those related to the finalization in the “short term”, of the process of adoption of the required statutes and regulatory texts and the organization of new elections.

For over fifteen months, French Cameroun authorities have attempted every trick in the book to deceive the world that Southern Cameroons restoration forces are laying down their arms. The corrupt dictatorship illegally occupying Ambazonia, has built three makeshift prisons housing common criminals and paid actors, and termed the facilities, Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration Centre.

The Monday, 1 February 2021 demonstration by alleged ex-Ambazonia separatist fighters in the Buea facility was a major embarrassment for the regime in Yaoundé. The protesters were heard screaming that they were “protesting against their poor living conditions and the unfulfilled promises of the La Republique du Cameroun Government ever since they dropped their arms.”

A Cameroon Concord News Group source on the scene said locals identified about eight of the protestors as burglars that are serving time in the Buea Central Prison. A local resident who elected anonymity furthered “I recognised four burglars who are supposed to be serving time for aggravated burglary since 2013. They have nothing to do with the Ambazonia struggle. They must have been paid by this corrupt government to stage that they live in the DDR centre. It is disgusting and disgraceful.”

As the protest continued, one of the alleged ex-separatist fighters said “the reason for the protest was because we have been suffering for more than a year since we laid down our arms. We have been living in unfavourable housing conditions, poor treatment, no jobs causing some of our wives and partners to leave us.” Another protestor shouted “all of the promises made to us by the government for jobs and employment are unfulfilled and because of this, we have decided to carry on a protest so the government can see in to their problems.”

In a country not known to show civility to protesters, the local population around Bokwango and Long Street in Buea were left suspicious and concerned at the peaceful manner that the government applied to stop the so-called protest. A local resident said “this was a staged protest especially after some on the true identities of the protestors were revealed and we are very worried that they are our new neighbours.”

The “mistress” Damaris Enyegue who is reportedly the wife of the younger brother of Minister Henri Eyebe Ayissi, the current Minister of Agriculture in the Biya Francophone regime was given severe beatings by the rector’s angry wife recently in the nation’s capital.

Cameroon Concord News gathered from sources deep inside the rector’s office that the crying mistress got her stockings and underwear ripped off and torn from her legs by Mrs. Patricia Sosso.

She grabbed hold of her victim’s hair and kicked her in the back during the snake beating.

Pr Maurice Aurélien Sosso approached his wife in an attempt to dissuade her, but he quickly gave up after being pushed to one side by his mike Tyson wife, Patricia Sosso also a lecturer in the University of Yaoundé 1.

As deportations continue in the US: Biden admin to send 60 more Cameroonians home 0

60 Cameroonians will be repatriated from the United States tomorrow Thursday 4 February 2021, a statement from the Ministry of External Relations (Minrex) has revealed. These Cameroonians are presumed to be in an irregular situation in the country.

According to another release from the Cameroon Embassy in the United States, these Cameroonians will arrive in Douala at 13:45 local time on board the Boeing 767-200 of the OMNI AIR International Company, on Thursday, February 4, 2021.

Their reception in Douala will be supervised by several administrative heads including Minrex officials, the embassy press release noted.

In view of the socio-political, security and health context that Cameroon is going through, special arrangements will be made for the said operation, hinted a confidential letter addressed to the Director of Douala International Airport by the Minister of External Relations.

The repatriation operations that started under the Trump administration are continuing under the Biden era.

On 14 October 2020, 57 Cameroonians landed at Douala International Airport from the United States.

These Cameroonians, 45 men and 12 women had been forced to return to Cameroon following a repatriation operation conducted jointly by the two countries.

A top U.N. official urged the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday to “collectively send a clear signal in support of democracy in Myanmar” as the 15-member body considered a possible statement condemning Monday’s coup.

U.N. Myanmar envoy Christine Schraner Burgener briefed the council in a private meeting after the Myanmar army detained Suu Kyi and others in response to “election fraud”, handed power to military chief Min Aung Hlaing, imposed a state of emergency for one year and pledged to hold new elections.

“I strongly condemn the recent steps taken by the military and urge all of you to collectively send a clear signal in support of democracy in Myanmar,” Schraner Burgener told the council, according to her prepared remarks.

“Let us be clear, the recent outcome of the election was a landslide victory for the National League for Democracy (NLD),” she said. “The military’s proposal to hold elections again should be discouraged.”

The Security Council is negotiating a possible statement, drafted by Britain, that would condemn the coup, call for the military to respect the rule of law and human rights, and immediately release those unlawfully detained, diplomats said. Such statements have to be agreed by consensus.

“I certainly hope that we’ll be able to speak with one voice,” British U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward, president of the council for February, told reporters after the meeting.

China, backed by Russia, shielded Myanmar from any significant council action after a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine State sent more than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing into Bangladesh, where they are still stranded. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Western states accused the Myanmar military of ethnic cleansing, which it denied.

A diplomat with China’s U.N. mission said after a council meeting on Tuesday that they were “shocked” that reporters had already seen the draft council statement, adding that “this will make the process of seeking consensus even more difficult.”

“We are of the view that any action by the Council should contribute to political and social stability of Myanmar and its peace and reconciliation, avoiding escalating the tension or further complicating the situation,” the diplomat said.

Russia’s U.N. mission is seeking instructions from Moscow on the draft statement, said deputy U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy, adding that the situation in Myanmar was “complex and volatile.”

The United Nations also raised fears on Monday that the coup in Myanmar will worsen the plight of some 600,000 Rohingya Muslims still in the country.

“At this point in time, we must ensure the protection of people of Myanmar and their fundamental rights. We must do everything to prevent violence from breaking out,” Schraner Burgener said.
