Two Southern Cameroonian men shot dead by Francophone soldiers in Wum

Two Southern Cameroonian men shot dead by Francophone soldiers in Wum 0

Two young Southern Cameroonian men have been killed by the Francophone dominated Cameroon government military during a night raid in Wum, the chief town in Menchum Division, North West region.

According to a report by the Ambazonia Interim Government (IG), the Cameroon government soldiers led by Colonel François Pelene inaugurated a new BIR camp in Wum and after the installation rituals the said Colonel ordered some soldiers to storm the Niakom Over side neighborhood in Wum promoting violent confrontations between the residents and the Francophone army soldiers.

Two young businessmen not identified by the IG were taken to the Wum hospital but succumbed to the injuries they had sustained during the Cameroon government military operation, the Vice President of the Ambazonia Interim Government Dabney Yerima said in statement.

In recent weeks, Cameroon government troops have ramped up attacks on Southern Cameroons towns and villages. As a result of these attacks, dozens of Ambazonian have lost their lives and many others have been arrested.

According to a Roman Catholic Southern Cameroons think tank in Germany, Francophone army soldiers have shot and killed at least 314 Southern Cameroonians since June 2022.

Charles III is formally proclaimed king by Accession Council

Charles III is formally proclaimed king by Accession Council 0

An historic Accession Council proclaimed Charles III as Britain’s new king on Saturday morning following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II aged 96. In his speech at Saturday’s ceremony at St James’s Palace in London, King Charles III vowed to follow the example of his late mother and said he was “deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty”.

The council, televised for the first time, is a centuries-old formality to recognise the new king’s sovereignty even though he automatically became monarch after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.

Several hundred privy councillors including current Prime Minister Liz Truss and all of her living predecessors, Charles’s wife Camilla and his eldest son and heir William all attended the ceremony at St James’s Palace, London.

King Charles III said his mother, who died on Thursday in Balmoral aged 96, “gave an example of lifelong love and of selfless service” that he promised to emulate. He added that he was “deeply aware” of the “duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty”.

Buckingham Palace becomes shrine for a grieving nation

Buckingham Palace becomes shrine for a grieving nation 0

A stream of mourners laid flowers and tributes outside Buckingham Palace on Friday, as it became the focal point of a country grieving the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Stony-faced soldiers in red coats and bearskin hats stood guard by the palace, the late queen’s London headquarters during her 70-year reign.

Mourners stood silently and watched, while some placed bouquets in the black railings of the landmark residence.

“We just wanted to pay tribute to the queen,” said Natalie Vehring, a violinist who has performed at concerts attended by the queen.

She was at the palace with her husband and two sons in school uniform, while on a video call with her mother in Australia.

“My mum says she remembers the king dying,” added the 46-year-old, referring to the queen’s father, George VI, who died in 1952.

“I grew up in Australia, the monarchy was a very huge part of our childhood, we sang the national anthem every day at school.

“It’s amazing how she was working a day before her passing,” she added.

People left candles in glass jars, rain-sodden Union Jack flags, newspapers bearing the late queen’s image and personal notes.

“Thank you. You served our country to the end. Faithful in God,” said one message.

“Thank you for your service Ma’am. You were a guiding light in dark times, the foundation of a nation, our strength and stay. Rest in peace,” read another.

One note, signed by “the coffee ladies”, said: “Beautiful Queen. Thank you, thank you for your constancy, your loyalty and long reign”.

‘Devastated’

Joan Russell, 55, a project manager from east London, had tears running down her cheeks as she looked at the flowers.

“I came to say a prayer,” she told AFP.

“Charles has had such a great example to follow. I believe he will do his very utmost to continue the legacy of his parents.”

There were similar scenes in Windsor, west of London, as well-wishers, many crying, left hundreds of bouquets and lit candles outside the gates of the late queen’s beloved castle.

One of those in tears was Marina Flynn, 79, whose husband used to work with the queen’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.

“She was wonderful, she’s done nothing wrong. I met her a couple of times with the Duke and they were always really nice. I just feel devastated,” said Flynn, dressed in black.

Others expressed concern about the new King Charles III.

“Oh I’m worried about what he would do,” said Estrella Linch, 78.

“He is not a decisive man, he doesn’t know how to take big decisions,” she added.

In Scotland, the former queen’s residence at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, which will house Elizabeth’s coffin before it travels to London, also became a focus of tributes.

Locals and curious tourists came to contemplate silently and lay flowers, as preparations began to welcome the queen’s coffin.

“All this pomp and glory is going to be a nice thing and a very sad thing,” said Rebecca Evans, 44, who works for a climate change think-tank.

“It’s going be an interesting few days.”

Premier League:  Fixtures postponed following Queen Elizabeth II’s death

Premier League:  Fixtures postponed following Queen Elizabeth II’s death 0

All Premier League matches this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it was announced on Friday.

English top flight clubs took the decision despite guidance from the British government that cancelling sporting events was not compulsory during a period of national mourning.

“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” the Premier League said in a statement.

“To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.”

All games in the English Football League, Women’s Super League and Scottish professional leagues have also been postponed.

Other sporting action in Britain scheduled for Friday, including Test cricket and European golf’s PGA Championship, has been cancelled as a mark of respect.

Those events could restart over the weekend.

However, sporting chiefs have been advised to avoid any clash with a state funeral, the date of which has yet to be announced.

“There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the national mourning period,” the government said in a guidance statement.

“This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the state funeral.”

Fixture crunch

With fixtures next weekend potentially impacted by the policing operation in London for the funeral, football authorities face the headache of a fixture pile-up in a season already congested by a mid-season World Cup.

Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Real Sociedad at Old Trafford and West Ham’s game against FCSB in the Europa Conference League at the London Stadium went ahead on Thursday with pre-match tributes.

The British Horseracing Authority said there would be no races on Saturday — extending cancellations into a third day.

King’s Lynn, the only horse owned by the queen entered to run this weekend, will not run at the Curragh on Sunday.

Racing will return on that day, with the programme featuring the St Leger, one of Britain’s five Classic races, which the queen won in 1977 with her filly Dunfermline.

A decision is yet to be made on any rescheduling of the third Test between England and South Africa at the Oval. Thursday’s first day was a washout.

England captain Ben Stokes said he would be “honoured” to play in the queen’s memory with the possibility the match could be extended into Tuesday to make up for lost time.

“She loved sport, be honoured to play in her memory,” Stokes tweeted in response to a question on whether sporting events should go ahead.

Organisers of the PGA Championship said they were “hopeful” of resuming play over the weekend at Wentworth, near London.

Play in the opening round was suspended on Thursday and postponed on Friday.

The final three stages of Cycling’s Tour of Britain were cancelled on Thursday, with Spain’s Gonzalo Serrano declared the winner.

Tributes poured in from sports stars in Britain and across the globe after the queen’s death was announced on Thursday.

Roger Federer hailed Queen Elizabeth II for her “elegance” and “grace” while Brazilian football great Pele said her “legacy will last forever”.

England football captain Harry Kane wrote on Twitter: “The queen was an amazing inspiration and will be remembered for her incredible years of service to this country. Rest in peace, Your Majesty.”

Cameroon gov’t forces kill another Southern Cameroonian in raid near Batibo

Cameroon gov’t forces kill another Southern Cameroonian in raid near Batibo 0

Francophone army soldiers have killed a Southern Cameroonian near Batibo, only a day after slaying a Southern Cameroons teenager in the outskirts of Numba Village on the Mamfe-Bamenda highway.

The killing was carried out some few miles into Batibo, in early Thursday.

Cameroon government military sources in Bamenda claimed that the Southern Cameroonian man had attacked the Biya regime’s forces with a den gun before a BIR soldier opened fire and killed him.

On Wednesday, Cameroon government forces fatally shot a 21-year-old Southern Cameroonian at Otu in Eyumojock Sub Division in Manyu.

Cameroon Concord News correspondent in Ekok said the victim was killed with a bullet to his chest. Our reporter added that the shooting had been unprovoked.

The Francophone dominated Cameroon government military have continued their near-daily raid-and-arrest operations in various parts of Southern Cameroons, wounding or killing Southern Cameroonians to achieve what Yaoundé calls “A Successful Back to School Operation.”

The Biya Beti Ewondo regime has reportedly killed more than 35,000 Southern Cameroonians across the South West and North West since the beginning of the war in 2016.

Football: Chelsea appoint Graham Potter as new manager

Football: Chelsea appoint Graham Potter as new manager 0

Graham Potter was appointed as Chelsea’s new manager on Thursday after leaving Brighton to replace the sacked Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.

Potter has agreed a five-year contract to take charge of the Premier League club, who praised his “progressive football and innovative coaching”.

The 47-year-old earned widespread admiration for his work at Brighton.

He led Brighton to a ninth-place finish last season and took them up to fourth in the table this term, while demanding entertaining and tactically astute performances from his players.

Potter’s first game as Chelsea boss will be a derby at west London neighbours Fulham on Saturday.

“I am incredibly proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this fantastic football club,” said the Englishman.

“I am very excited to partner with Chelsea’s new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of.

“I would also like to place my sincere thanks to Brighton and Hove Albion for allowing me this opportunity.”

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly, who axed Tuchel just seven games into the new season, believes Potter will fit perfectly with his vision for the future at Stamford Bridge.

“We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea. He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the club,” Boehly said.

“Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, he has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea a more successful club.

“He has had a major impact at his previous clubs and we look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea.”

A Boehly-led consortium completed its takeover of the club earlier this year, bringing to an end Roman Abramovich’s reign.

Yaoundé says Amba fighters have attacked a Francophone village

Yaoundé says Amba fighters have attacked a Francophone village 0

Authorities in Cameroon say anglophone separatists have attacked a francophone village that was hosting people displaced by the five-year separatist conflict. Officials in the town of Bongourain say the rebels torched homes and markets and abducted at least five youths. Hundreds of English-speaking displaced fled into the bush for fear they would be blamed by the host community, underscoring tensions with Cameroon’s French-speaking majority.

Scores of people talk among themselves as they shop at the Bangourain market square. Bangourain is located in Cameroon’s French-speaking West region, which shares a border with the English-speaking Northwest region.

Local officials say that usually, more than 500 merchants and buyers visit the market each day.

But attendance has drastically dropped for fear the English-speaking rebels may strike at any time, according to Bangourain residents.

Aboubakar Hamagabdo is coordinator of militia groups created by local officials to prevent separatists from infiltrating the town.

Hamagabdo said civilians in Bangourain are in pain and serious difficulties after a series of hit and run rebel attacks in their town within the past three days. He said dozens of houses have been torched, money and goods stolen, scores of civilians wounded, and five youths abducted by English speaking separatists. Hamagabdo said the separatists cross over using the porous border that separates English and French speaking regions.

Hamagabdo has appealed to Cameroon’s central government to deploy more troops to protect Bangourain. He also asked the government to compensate people whose houses and goods were torched by the fighters and pleaded with separatists to spare the lives of abducted civilians.

Separatists have claimed responsibility over the attack on social media but have not said if they will release the abducted youths.

Cameroon government officials say Bangourain hosts at least 800 people who fled fighting between separatists and government troops in the Northwest and Southwest regions. A majority of the displaced people are school goers in search of education.

Eighteen-year-old high school student Agnes Ngoran fled from the northwest town of Kumbo.

Ngoran said on Monday, rebels chased students out of schools.

“We escaped from our towns and villages in the Northwest and in the Southwest and came here for our education. Fighters should allow us to go to school. Children need an education; it is a fundamental human right. These fighters should spare schools from their attacks,” said Ngoran.

The government on Wednesday dispatched a delegation to Bangourain to assure civilians that measures are being taken to safeguard people and their goods.

The group of government and military officials was led by West region governor Awah Fonka. Fonka said separatists are infiltrating the region from Bui, an administrative unit in the Northwest region.

He said troops stationed along the porous border need cooperation from local residents.

“We came to make the population know that we will continue to take measures to ensure their security, but of course for this to happen, at all times we need their participation. We need them to give information to the security services,” he said.

Fonka warned host communities against accusing English-speakers of hiding separatists who infiltrate Bangourain. He said all displaced English-speakers in Bangourain are also escaping from separatist atrocities.

Fonka pleaded with English and French speaking civilians in Bangouran to live in peace and help fight separatists whom he described as Cameroon’s common enemy.

UK: Queen Elizabeth’s doctors ‘concerned’ for her health 0

Queen Elizabeth II’s closest family travelled to join the 96-year-old monarch on Thursday after doctors placed her under medical supervision, prompting concern from British political and religious leaders.

Britain’s longest-serving monarch has been dogged by health problems since last October that have left her struggling to walk and stand.

All her children — heir to the throne Prince Charles, 73, Princess Anne, 72, Prince Andrew, 62, and Prince Edward, 58, were either at or heading to join her at the Balmoral royal estate in Scotland, aides said.

Also heading to Balmoral was Charles’s elder son Prince William along with his younger son Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, who have been on a rare visit to Britain after abandoning royal life to move to the United States.

The queen — an instantly recognisable figure to billions of people across the world — is in her Platinum Jubilee year, marking 70 years since she succeeded her father king George VI in 1952.

Moments before Thursday’s announcement, notes were passed in the House of Commons to Prime Minister Liz Truss, her ministers and opposition leaders, prompting them to leave the chamber.

“The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime,” the new premier tweeted, just two days after the queen appointed her at Balmoral to succeed Boris Johnson.
