Camair-Co pilots plan nationwide strike from Aug. 13 0

Unionized Camair-Co (QC) pilots affiliated with the Union of Airline Pilots and Flight Engineers of Cameroon Civil Aviation (SPINAC) plan to strike indefinitely across Cameroon beginning Aug. 13. The strike is being called due to flight safety concerns and to demand improved working conditions, among other issues.

Increased demand for airline tickets serving similar routes is likely for the duration of the strike. Lingering disruptions are possible in the hours following the end of the strike.

Biya regime facing severe fiscal pressures amidst Amba crisis and conflict

Biya regime facing severe fiscal pressures amidst Amba crisis and conflict 0

Cameroon, the second-largest economy in Central Africa, is under pressure to enhance its economic performance, according to a recent World Bank report. Despite successfully reducing its fiscal deficit to 1.1% of GDP in 2022, primarily through cuts in public investment, the country now faces critical challenges in tax collection and public spending.

Key Points:

Fiscal Adjustments: Cameroon achieved a notable reduction in its fiscal deficit over six years but did so by slashing public investment. This approach has led to low public expenditure levels, impacting the quality of public services and infrastructure development.

Revenue and Spending Concerns: The World Bank emphasizes the need for a comprehensive medium-term revenue strategy to boost tax collection efficiency and address spending inefficiencies. Social sectors, particularly health and education, have suffered due to under-investment.

Taxation Issues: Direct taxes and international trade levies have underperformed, leaving the country overly reliant on value-added tax.

Urgent Financing: Amid high US interest rates making dollar borrowing costly, Cameroon recently issued $550 million in dollar bonds, indicating pressing financial needs.

The report underscores the necessity for targeted spending and better fiscal management to spur economic growth in Cameroon.

MOHWA: A Rudderless Ship

9, August 2024

MOHWA: A Rudderless Ship 0

Over the last month, MOHWA has been caught up in a terribly heart-breaking downward spiral with many of its members jumping ship, including some close associates of the president of the home branch who many accuse of financial misconduct and intimidation. The once popular Manyu organization is today a shadow of its former self as new Manyu women’s organizations see the light of day. MOHWA has become a rudderless ship as the organization’s leadership cannot deliver any meaningful results without the financial support it once enjoyed.

The creation of EYUMEMA in the United States which was once collaborating with the MOHWA home branch is still a bitter pill to swallow for many and the MOHWA leadership is yet to recover from this blow to the liver. Today, EYUMEMA is clearly the organization most Manyu women around the world are looking up to as they consider that MOHWA is a ship wrecked by greed, arrogance and intimidation. Speaking to some former and current members of MOHWA in Buea, Kumba, Mamfe and Douala, Cameroon Concord News discovered that the messages of frustration were the same. Many of those Cameroon Concord News spoke to were unanimous, pointing out that the president of MOHWA Cameroon, a Buea University professor, was clearly to blame for the chaos and demise of MOHWA around the world.

“We commend the Cameroon Concord News Group for the work it is doing to expose the ills which are robbing MOHWA of the reputation it once enjoyed. MOHWA was designed to help women come together for them to help the Manyu girl child, but ever since Prof. Comfort Beyang took over the reins of the organization, it has become a platform for Manyu educated women to display their degrees and personal achievements. This display of academic titles is choking the organization and many of us are now looking towards EYUMEMA. We hope EYUMEMA too will not fall into the same madness which is tearing MOHWA apart,” a frustrated lady from Kumba who elected anonymity told Cameroon Concord News.

The Manyu title disease which has destroyed many Manyu organizations has finally reared its ugly head in MOHWA and it is killing an organization which was once the beacon of hope for many Manyu women. Titles mean nothing if they are not used to mobilize people for development purposes. The people of Manyu must understand that titles have their contexts and using them in the wrong place only makes the title holder to be despised and ignored. Of what value is an academic title like a PhD in a social gathering where the different audience segments are supposed to work seamlessly together with the objective of achieving a common goal? Since when did a title like Sesekou become useful in a non-ekpe environment? Ekpe is part of Manyu culture and not Manyu culture and taking it to parties and churches is an abuse which must be punished if Ekpe is really a structured and development-oriented organization.

Using titles out of their rightful context is a total turn-off. Academic titles do not necessarily imply that the holder of such titles has the charisma and skills for good leadership. Great leadership does not require loud-sounding titles. Members of MOHWA should understand this so that when electing their new leaders in their upcoming convention they would focus on people who have the charisma and humility which good leadership requires.

The President of MOHWA who is also a University Professor should have known that holding the title of professor does not make her a genius. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Seneca, Rousseau and many others have been considered as some of the finest minds the world has ever known, but none had an academic title. They all worked in the interest of society and humanity. None of us knows the school Socrates attended for him to be the best of his time and a key reference around the world today.

Also speaking to an influential Manyu lady residing in Douala and who held MOHWA so close to her heart, Cameroon Concord News could easily feel the frustration and disappointment which is eroding this lady’s happiness. She was angry and pointed out that many people had spoken to the MOHWA president for a change of course in order not to destroy the organization, but all the advice from senior Manyu ladies has clearly fallen on deaf ears.

“I am really heart-broken seeing the mess playing out. MOHWA is definitely on its last leg. Its demise is certain as many women gyrate towards EYUMEMA and other women’s groups. I have been a fervent supporter of MOHWA, especially in the days of Dr. Agbor Magdalene who ran the organization for many years. We all supported Comfort Beyang when she expressed an interest in running MOHWA and Agbor Meg campaigned for her, but today, she and Agbor Meg are not talking. Dr. Agbor Meg has already jumped ship and is a strong supporter of EYUMEMA.  I am thinking of jumping ship too. I am just waiting for the conclusions and recommendations of the upcoming MOHWA convention in August,” the disappointed lady who elected anonymity said.

Asked if there was someone who could validly replace the current president, the lady added that: “We have been looking for a possible replacement and most of the senior Manyu ladies in Cameroon have their eyes on a few young and dynamic ladies who are humble and can easily mobilize other women. We are already coalescing around one young lady who stands out and we are sure the next convention will be the game changer. The current president is on her way out. She is indeed staring down the barrel of defeat as she is increasingly becoming isolated and radioactive. She has created a toxic environment and even the hardcore members of her inner circle are already contemplating abandoning her. The ship is sinking and the disgrace is already hurting their reputation. Though in public they pretend to be loyal, most of them know that the end is near and that it will be in their best interest to be on the right side of history. MOHWA is bigger than anybody. The president has a choice – do the right and honorable thing by resigning or continue to hold on and end up with an empty shell in the name of an organization,” she added.

“MOHWA has been diminished. The defections are hurting us all. There are many senior Manyu ladies in Yaoundé who are sick to the stomach because of the imminent collapse of an organization which has brought joy and happiness to many Manyu ladies. If the current president had listened, EYUMEMA would not have walked away. EYUMEMA has the crowd and wherewithal. EYUMEMA’s war chest is huge and it is capable of accomplishing a lot in Manyu. The current MOHWA leadership did not need to threaten EYUMEMA with a law suit when we have traditional recourse mechanisms to address our differences. Anger against a sister should never reach the bone. Currently, the president is fighting with the leadership of NYENE MAWN over proprietary rights and this is only leaving her with a bloodshot eye. She knows she is sinking but her pride and arrogance will not let her throw in the towel. She will not win any of these fights as her financial base is hollow,” she stressed.

“However, though EYUMEMA and NYENE MAWN have walked away, there is still room for collaboration. We are all daughters of Manyu and our goal is to give the Manyu girl child a chance to see life in a different light. We cannot let one person destroy an entire organization which has stood the test of time. The current president is like a bad tooth which is making the entire mouth restless and uncomfortable. This bad tooth must be yanked out if the mouth must know its peace. We are all looking forward to the next convention or Assembly for a change of guard. We will work with all sister organizations to make Manyu a better place than we met it,” she concluded.

Disagreement is as old as time, but it is a demon which is destroying Manyu Division. People of Manyu descent must learn how to accept differences and, possibly, make something good out of those differences. The current MOWHA leadership should have understood that it is challenging to lead people who have money to run other own lives. It would have been in the best interest of Manyu Division if MOHWA had demonstrated flexibility in the application of its decades-old rules given that the times have changed and many people of Manyu descent now live out of their natural cultural environment.

MOHWA needs new leadership. The organization’s current leadership has not lived up to the glorious expectations of many of its members. The wave of defections and the creation of other organizations is testament to the frustration which has become MOHWA’s hallmark. If MOHWA must survive, then something has to change and the organization’s leadership must reinvent MOHWA. But the current MOHWA leadership lacks the trust of its members. It cannot be trusted, especially as it is using intimidation and fake legal procedures to frustrate those who have ideas which run counter to what it holds. Reconciliation should be the mantra of the next MOHWA leadership but MOHWA members must vote out the current leadership if their organization must continue to stand the test of time.

Yaoundé: UN rights chief calls for access to Southern Cameroons 0

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights requested on Wednesday better access to Cameroon’s restive separatist regions and called for revisions to an anti-terror law that rights groups say has been used to silent dissent.

Factions of secessionist militias have been battling government troops in Cameroon’s two English-speaking regions since 2017, leading to thousands of deaths and displacing nearly 800,000 people.

“I have called on the government to facilitate humanitarian access to areas affected by conflict,” Volker Turk said after a two-day visit to the Central African country.

“I have also urged the government to revise the 2014 anti-terrorism law in this regard,” he said.

Amnesty International has described that law, which mandates the death penalty, as repressive and says it curtails rights, opens new tab protected in Cameroon’s constitution.

In a 2022 report, Amnesty found that the majority of people jailed from the Anglophone regions had been sentenced under the law.

In 2017 a journalist was sentenced to 10 years in prison on terrorism charges under the legislation.

Football: Portugal defender Pepe announces retirement at 41 0

Portugal veteran Pepe announced on Thursday in a video on social media he was retiring from football aged 41.

“I would like to thank you all,” said the centre-back as he cited the clubs he represented, as well as the Portuguese national team and his family.

“Everyone gave me the support I needed to leave with my mind at ease.”

Pepe joined Portuguese side Maritimo at the age of 18 and went on to play for Porto, Spanish giants Real Madrid and Turkish club Besiktas.

He spent a trophy-laden 10 years with Madrid, where he won three Champions Leagues, two Club World Cups and three Spanish league titles.

He also enjoyed two stints at Porto, between 2004-2007 and 2019-2024, winning a total of four Portuguese championships and five Portuguese Cups.

Although born in Brazil, the centre-back made his international debut for his adopted country of Portugal in 2007 and went on to earn 141 caps, winning the their first piece of major silverware at Euro 2016, as well as the Nations League three years later.

Pepe set a new record as the oldest player to ever play at a European Championship when he started Portugal’s opening game at Euro 2024, aged 41.

Portugal’s elimination on penalties at the quarter-final stage of the tournament against France turned out to be the final game of Pepe’s 22-year career at the top level of the game.

Portuguese football federation president Fernando Gomes labelled the defender “one of the greatest players of all time” and thanked him for his “extraordinary professionalism, dedication… and passion for football”.

FECAFOOT cancels kit deal with One All Sports

FECAFOOT cancels kit deal with One All Sports 0

FECAFOOT on Monday terminated its contract with American Sportswear giant One All Sports, ending a two-year partnership.

In a release announcing the termination, the Secretary General of FECAFOOT Blaise Djounang cited contractual breaches as the reason for the decision.

The Blaise statement furthered “The Cameroon Football Federation places great importance on the proper fulfillment of contractual obligations by both parties. That’s why we’ve terminated this contract and ended the partnership with this supplier.”

Cameroon Concord News understands that the Indomitable Lions will wear the One All Sports product for the last time in September before the federation launches a tender to find a new kit supplier.

The Samuel Eto’o teleguided decision comes as the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are set to begin next month. The Indomitable Lions, grouped with Namibia, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, will start their qualification campaign on September 6, 2024, in Douala against Namibia.

Tensions between Fecafoot and One All Sports had been brewing for months. In March 2024, the federation had already expressed concerns about the non-compliance with certain contractual clauses.

One All Sports was chosen to replace the French supplier Le Coq Sportif, whose contract had been terminated prematurely for similar reasons. At the time, Fecafoot hailed the contract with the American brand as the most lucrative in its history, with a commitment of XAF1 billion annually or XAF3 billion throughout the contract period. The amount was more than double what Le Coq Sportif offered. However, the partnership with One All Sports ultimately failed to meet Fecafoot’s expectations. Based in Bangkok and primarily known for its activities in motorsports, One All Sports was at the center of controversy from the beginning, notably due to the dispute with Le Coq Sportif.

Catalan separatist leader Puigdemont sought by police upon return to Spain

Catalan separatist leader Puigdemont sought by police upon return to Spain 0

The former head of Catalonia, Charles Puigdemont, was back in Spain on Thursday after seven years on the run, despite facing arrest. Puigdemont, who fled the country over his role in a failed bid for Catalonian independence, addressed supporters at a park near the regional parliament, which is set to elect a new leader later in the day.

Carles Puigdemont, the former leader of Catalonia who fled Spain over his role in a failed 2017 independence bid for the wealthy region, returned to Spain on Thursday after seven years on the run despite a pending arrest warrant.

Puigdemont shouted “Long live a free Catalonia!” as he climbed onto a stage in Barcelona to address thousands gathered near the Catalan regional parliament which is set to elect a new leader later in the day.

“I have come here to remind you that we are still here,” he said as many in the crowd waved red, yellow and blue Catalan independence flags.

After his brief address, Puigdemont appeared to head towards the nearby Catalan parliament but the assembly began an investiture vote to pick a new leader for the region without him being present.

It was not immediately clear where he was.

Nuria Pujol, a woman in her fifties who came to Barcelona from the Alt Penedes region to see Puigdemont, called him “a very noble person”.

“The only one who believes in independence and has not stopped believing,” she added.

A small group of protesters gathered nearby waving Spanish flags and holding signs that read “Catalonia is Spain” in a demonstration organised by far-right party Vox.

World Bank urges Biya regime to enhance tax collection

World Bank urges Biya regime to enhance tax collection 0

Cameroon, Central Africa’s second-largest economy, needs to strengthen its tax collection and improve public spending efficiency to boost economic growth, according to the World Bank.

Despite reducing its fiscal deficit by approximately 5 percentage points over six years to just 1.1% of GDP in 2022, largely through cuts in public investment, the World Bank emphasizes that targeted spending is crucial for sustainable growth.

“Cameroon’s fiscal consolidation was expenditure-driven, leading to low levels of public spending that hinder the provision of adequate services and infrastructure investment,” the World Bank noted in a recent report.

To enhance its economic performance, Cameroon needs a medium-term revenue strategy focused on more effective tax collection and improved allocation of resources. Social sectors like health and education have been particularly impacted by under-investment and inefficiencies.

The report also highlights the need to diversify revenue sources, as direct taxation remains low and stagnant. Cameroon’s reliance on value-added tax is compounded by underperforming international trade taxes and levies on property and forests, which cover a third of the country’s territory.

Amid rising global interest rates, borrowing costs in dollars have increased, forcing many governments to seek domestic solutions. However, Cameroon recently secured $550 million through a dollar bond sale with a yield of 10.75%, indicating an urgent need for financing despite challenging conditions.

Cameroon has faced numerous crises, including the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, internal conflicts have exacerbated poverty in various regions, and a decline in crude oil production has strained government revenue.

Nonetheless, the International Monetary Fund anticipates growth to accelerate from 3.3% in 2023 to 3.9% in 2024, despite a tense political atmosphere. The 91-year-old President Paul Biya, who has ruled for nearly 42 years, is expected to seek re-election in the upcoming February presidential polls, amidst increasing political repression.

US: Kamala Harris picks Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as running mate 0

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential running mate on Tuesday, according to US media.

Walz, a former US Army National Guard veteran and teacher, brings a blend of progressive policy achievements and Midwestern appeal to the Harris-Walz ticket, as they prepare to challenge Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance in the upcoming election.

Vice President Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate on Tuesday, choosing an affable longtime politician who Democrats hope can keep newfound party unity alive in a campaign barreling toward Election Day.

Harris said in a post on social media that Walz has “delivered for working families.” The two will appear together in Philadelphia at an evening rally.
